Seattle Foreign butter continue to form the chief rail of Interest tn the leading markets of the rnitrd State, although to date this see on Portland ha been remarkably free of each supplies. However, other markrU have received libera nippHe, and. naturally, this influences the entire American trade. California has received additional stork of Australian batter, and with New England atock available in both American and Canadian mar ket during the next few day the coast trade will be folly supplied with foreign atock. Eastern market hare received considerable Dsmsh batter of late, and this ha told at lower ndess. It quite naturally follows that the pruw on domestic atock ahould be infhi- Constlerable New Zealand stock in being of fered to Portland by Northern and 8oathern importer, and some small axle were reported closed. Review of the butter market at San Fran eiaoe for the week ending Friday: The market did not bold tip this week, as was generally looked for. The principal factor in the decline waa the Inflwnce of the ex pected arrival of Australian batter December 20. Dealer Were baring Ur immediate need only and were anxion.1 to keep . stork cleaned up, anticipating a declining market. Large leieiiei were forced to make concessions to mr.ve their surplus receipts, bat rednced prices did not stJmnlate business. The market de clined 4 4 c on 92 score from Monday to Friday. It i reported from fairly reliable aonrrwg that the two steamer Ventnra and Tahiti will dork December 28 with about 19.. 400 -cube (S pounds), or ammximately I.ORfl.OOO pounds of Australian butter. Some of thia will be needed on the Pacific Coast, but the balk of it will go to Eastern markets. Further decline are looked for at Ran Fran eiaeo next week, a many denier have foreign butter coming and will be off the market for Wl goods. Market closed weak and unset tled. Review of the butter markets at Chicago and Philadelphia for the week ending Friday: Eastern market wire weaker than for some time. - Principal factor causing the Mknea were the foreign batter and heavy production early in the week. Danish butter was offered aKdOVie f. o. b. New Tork. which price was lowered to about 37e at the rinse. Next two i steamers, Frederick VIII and Mon golia, due the latter part of this week or the early part of next week, are expected to curry about 6000 casks of Danish butter. Production is very heavy and the American Creamery j Butter Manufacturers' association rhosrs an increase in the make over last year of 45 7 per cent and an increase over the rreviou week of 3.9 per cent. Receipts by the middle of the week for the four cities were about 10.000 tnb heavier than the pre vious week. All market were weak, hut New Tork the lowest becau-e of the foreign batter there. Quality of domestic batter rather poor, with stable frown feed and other feed flavors prominent. Light colors complained of in Chicago. Those destiing special information regarding any market (hould write the Market Editor, Oregon Journal, inclosing ktamp for reply. EGO MARKET DROPS ELSEWHERE While no change is shown in the local teg price for the week's opening, weakness is in dicated at some points, although generally speaking the market is affected by weather conditions. FOR ama JwAtAnUET- BASKET arm, swiecw By Hrnaa H. Cofcei j With most everyone stuffed ; with Christmas goodies, it win be necessary to tempt the appetite somewhat during the next few days. Why not try a nice piece of salmon or halibut for a change. People consume too much meat and not enough fish, and this is a good chance to make the change. Oysters are now at their best, and would be a welcome change from fowL It is surprising the number of people who never taste fresh oysters, but de pend upon the canned stock for their needs. There is as much difference be tween fresh ;tnd canned oysters as be tween beef steak and pork chops. Most remarkable is the lowness of oyster prices now as compared with general foods. If you have that sort of filled up condition, perhaps the best thing you can do is to Join the apple club by eat ing at least one apple a day. Good apples are really low priced. Cohan Confirmation is now practically available that at least two cargoes of wheat have been sold by Portland to Portugal. There have been rumor here for several days to the ef fect that a couple of cargoes had been sold from the Pacific Northwest terminals, bat it has been impossible to confirm the reports np to this time. New confirmation Is prac tically available to the effect that a local exporter secured the sale of the two steamer loads. Exporters deny, as usual, that they have se en red or have recently secured any foreign business whatever, but denial; appear to be the main thing that exporters indulge in here. If their denials are to be taken seriously, they would mean that not a single cargo has been sold here this season. This is done to affect the market price of wheat. While one local mill reports an advance of $1 a ton in the price of millran. with values at $20 21, reports indicate that recent 30 day delivery sales have been made by another mill several dollar below this. Just why the low-priced sale was made is not known, be cause there has been a liberal movement in the demand for millstuffs of Isae and a gen eral cleanup of offerings Is indicated Flour market shows a fair tone at former prices. PACKERS REDUCE PRICE ON LIB la aa effort to gtimolate the sale of mut ton and lamb and especiallj the larger local packer today! announced a very sharp reduction in the price of heavyweight stock, although making no I change at the moment in lighter, weights. A cut of 4o a pound, one of the greatest ever made at this time, has been forced in former prices on heavyweight lambs, those weighing from 50 to 55 pound, at 15c a pound. The former pries on such stock was 19c, but the public refused to purchase and the result wag that .retailers quit buying. Pack ers therefore arbitrarily cut the price 4c a pound in an effort to stimulate consumption. They do this, they aay. to bring the demand back, although they are losing money oa aafca now being made. As lamb has been the highest price meat on the local maxket and as the general public has refused to eat it at any price, packers found themselves with high-cost meat on hand and do demand in sight. North Portland had a ma of but 60 loads of livestock from Saturday to Tuesday morning. a rather limited showing for the week's initial trade. This was reflected in a general' advance for bogs and cattle. Mutton and lamba alone were weak at the start of the Tuesday morning trade. Hoc market all ever the country reflected a stimulated demand for the week's opening trade inosoay. no market were shown anywhere Monday. Chicago. Omaha and other centers east of the Rockies reflected strength with, higher prices the rule at leading points. ' - North Portland started the week's trade with a continuation of the previous week's strength. Dot this was sufficiently pronounced to force a general quotation of $9.25 for prime lights. whereas only extreme sales in limited volume had previously been made at that point Perhaps one very good reason for the ad vance here, aside from the sympathetic feeling with the eastern trade was the fact that of the total supply to come into the alleys, 1566 head out ol 1IM24 Dead came direct to killers from Midwest purchase.
