Christmas and Its holy significance as exemplified by the Italian artists of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries con stitutes the major paVt of the annual Christmas exhibit at the Portland Art museum, which opened Thursday and will continue over Christmas. . The central figure of this year's ex hibit is an original Madonna and Child painted by Carlo Dolcl, a seventeenth century artist, and purchased by Miss Isabel Ollbaugh, buyer for Lipman, Wolfe A Co., while in Europe recently. The painting Is authenticated by Bode Berlin, a recognized European author ity in art matters. Dolci's name stands out in a well recognized position among the noted artists of his time. The pic ture has the characteristics of the best known work of that time, the downcast eyes, the delicately colored flesh and sweetness of expression or the Madonna and the contrasting richness of color in troducd In the draplngs. The frame is, perhaps, as old as the picture, extremely ornate, hand carved, cherub heads being the motif, and the gilt and touches of color are beautifully mellowed with age. The picture Is valued at $5000. Three additional valuable originals, loaned for the exhibit by Mrs. Lucy Dodd Ramberg. comprise a central group on Christmas Special For Girls , and Boys KOKOMO ROLLER SKATES $2.25 the Boy FIRS CHRISTMAS Roller Skates 1.85 to $ 8.50 Footballs ....... 1.75 to 12.00 Bojcingf Gloves . . 5.00 to 16.00 Ice Skates 2.0 to 10.00 Punching Bags : . 4.50 to 16.00 Baseball Gloves .. 1.00 to 10.00 Bicycles 35.00 to 75.00 Basketball Shoes. 4.00 to 6,50 Air Rifles 2.00 to 5.00 Flashlights 1.00 to 3.50 .22 Rifles 4,50 to 31.15 For Hei We have a wonderful selection of Electrical j gifts .and useful things for her kitchen. ! Public Market Is Finishing Best Year v In History, Claim . That the public market has a stabilizing influence on the prices of green goods In the city Is the declaration o" J. A. Eastman, market master, in his annual report filed in the office of C. A. Bigelow, commissioner of public af fairs, Saturday. This is proved, he said. by the fact that prices for. farm produce on the market were on the average 10 per cent lower than those charged by retail dealers. The report indicated that the fiscal year of 1921 was the best in the history of the market, which was established in 1914. Approximately 60,000 farmers reg istered for stalls during the year. This Is 15.000 more than for the year 1920. From the 15 cent rental fee charged mm Men and Boys You, too,' will be -glad to do your shopping here, away from the big crowds. When Historian George Hitnes was 10 years old In those days the early fifties when our great grandfathers wore stove-pipe hats and Historian George Himes was a mischievous 10-year-old, the Hotel Me tropolis was the city's best hotel and social center. There men dreamed of empires and set to work to build them into being. Within its walls properties now worth fortunes were traded for such things as shot guns and miners' boots. , And then, as now Edward Holman & Son maintained leadership and held the confidence of the public, just as it does today. . fnrTADV Till?
