country and purchas there. It has been

If you really want to beat the turkey
market, buy a chicken.. At this time
chickens are really low priced and quaW

than turkeys.

came to North Portland over Sunday went direct

steamship Wapama at 11 a. m., followed
by the tanker Frank O. Drum at noon.
The Pacific steamship intercoastal. liner
Springfield dropped in during the night.
On top of that movement three Jap
anese steamships came poking in. They
were the Reiyo Maru, Oregon Maru and
Glasgow Maru. The three foreign vessels
will reach the local harbor this after
noon and will load cargo for the Orient.

The Warren' Oma-trvctioa Company
this morning gotths cos tract for the
paving of the west approach to the Haw-
thorne bridge because the city paving
plant's bid was several hours late In
reaching the county commissioners.
- The bid of the Warren people was
$1.65 a quare yard. $1389 In alL The
city's Bid was cost plus 10 per cent, not
to exceed $1.40 a yard. Corrcnlssioner;
Barbur wrote the letter to the) county
commission on November 15. The bids
were due at 10 a. m., November IS. His
letter and bid were not received until 4
p. m.. November 1$, evidently through
the failure of some clerk to mall the
letter. '
The county commission did. not act on
the bids until today.

STEAMER BRINGS GENERAL

The steamship 1 Eldorado of the Pa
cific, Carribean & Gulf line, Swayne &
Hoyt, is discharging coffee and general
cargo at terminal No. 1. The Eldorado
brought to Portland about 6000 bags
from Mexico. In addition she has on
board several hundred tons of general
cargo from Mobile. The steamer will
proceed to Puget Sound to finish dis
charging and load part outbound cargo
for the return voyage.
The steamship Springfield, in the in
tercoastal service of the Pacific Steam
ship company, discharged 375 tons of
cargo. She Is held up at terminal No.
2 on account of the log Jam at the Burn
side bridge. The Springfield is going
out light to load at Seattle and Grays
Harbor.
DAN CASEY TRIAL HALTS:
JCROR ATTENDS FUNERAL
The trial of Dan Casey, charged with
the murder of James Harry (Buck) Phil
lips, was halted at 11 o'clock this morn
ing, while David M. Latsh. one of the
Jurors, attended the funeral of his sister.
Court reconvened at 2 o'clock. It was
expected that attorneys would begin the
closing arguments this morning, but at
the last minute the defense decided to
call Mrs. John L. Burns in an attempt
to strengthen Casey's alibi. Mrs. Burns'
husband is jointly charged with Casey
with the murder. He has not stood trial
yet however.

Faces Third Charge

Wash was acquitted in Judge Sheeky
department of superior court Saturday
of a grand larceny charge In connection
with the passing of an alleged worth
less check for $70, drawn on the Mon
tesano State bank and cashed by the
Bank of Elma.
Judge Sheeks directed a verdict of
not guilty, when he held that the charge
of larceny was incorrect In that It
named the Montesano bank as the vic
tim, whereas the victim was the Elma
bank. At the last term of court Judge
A Dei directed a verdict of not guilty
against the same defendant when the
Elma bank was named as the victim.
Wash was rearrested as he left the
courtroom on a charge of "passing s
wortniess check."

A. J. Doyle of The Journal composing
room force was among the storm-bound
motorists who were compelled to leave
their machines at Eagle Creek on the
Columbia PUver highway Saturday night
because of the snow. Doyle and two'
companions left HooYl River at' 9:30 Sat
urday morning and the going was fair
until a point just west of Cascade Locks
was reached, when it was necessary to
buck snowdrifts repeatedly? It was S :30
when Eagle Creek was reached, 22 miles
west of Hood River, and here the Doyle
party abandoned its car and returned
to Portland on the last west-bound train.
Doyle says when be left Eagle Creek
there were probably 30 other cars aban
doned there because of the storm.

Montesano. Wash., Nov. 21. Pupils in
the Oakville grade " school are being
served hot lunches this winter st a cost
of 3 cents a dish. Mrs. Clara Vosper.
teacher of the eighth grade, assisted by
her domestic science pupils, prepares the
lunch each day. As st rule but one
hot dish is served snd It is intended to
be supplementary to the cold lunch the
children bring. Of the 87 children in
the school. 80 take advantage of the op
portunity. r

Records in the city health office this
mdrntng show th-u there is an Increase
in the number of cases of scarlet fever
In the city. Fifty-two cases are now
under quarantine. Diptherta. with 88-
cases and smallpox with 19. show a de
crease, according to Dr. George Parrlah.

Hoquiam Club Quits
To Help New Cause
Hoquiam. Wash., Nov. 21. By a reso
lution adopted Friday night by the board
of directots, the Hoquiam Young Busi
ness Men's club, organised here a year
ago. is declared dissolved and Its mem
bers pledged to support civic advance
ment through the Hoquiam Commercial
club. The dissolution of lba club fol
lowed a decision of directors to donate
$108. remaining In the treasury, to the
Pacific Northwest Tourists' association
to complete Hoqulam's quota.

are disposing of s large herd of Ayr
shires snd will replace the stock with
Holsteins.
