" By, that time the rrnsb of rreen a tuff downstream will be fairly well cleaned up and wheat shippers are agreeable to the day schedule. "Business between Portland and mid die river points la ffood. said Manager . C. E. StAlsmlth. "Until we started the Teal out this summer there had not been a whistle blown for the locks In more than a year. People In a way have lost confidence, but are comic back, and the Teal is on the run to' stay."- It was further announced by the ope, a tors of the Teal that an option had been obtained on a fast steamer for a dally round trip service, leaving" Port land each night with the exception of the one day off. This service, with the Teal aa a freight boat, will start things moving; on one .of the- greatest and most neglected waterways in the United States. TOLEDO MAT BUT BOAT ! KBOM U. 8. BHIPFISG BOABD Washington, Oct S. Inquiries from Toledo, Or., as to possibility of securing a boat from the shipping board for use at that port received by JdcNary and submitted through George & Chamber lain of the shipping board, have brought the reply that if a suitable draft boat la - found, tbe board would be - willing; to sell., but that Toledo probably will find it more profitable to take a Teasel on the bar boat basis. Farther Informa tion aa to Toledo's wishes will be asked. The shipping board announces that char - . torero of vessels on tbe Pacific coast us- " Ing the bare boat agreement are to be allowed to send them on Pacific voyages, and the board will not regard this as an ' interference or conflict with allocated ships. Hire is at the rate of SO cents a month on total deadweight tonnage. Thirty shlpg are ready tof charter on the Pacific coast This apparently opens the way for the Pacific Steamship company to operate shipping board ves sels out of the Columbia liver, as Vice .President Haines recently stated they intend to do, notwithstanding' exclusive allocation at that port to the Columbia- Paciflo Shipping company. DOCK COMMISSION BUDGET MAT BK REDUCED 11,008 A cut of approximately $32,000 was asked in the budget passed by. the dock commission at a special meeting Eatur day morning. The total budget for 1922 calls for 618.i08 as compared with the allotment of 1653,000 for 1920. The bud. get la asked for on the basis of a 1,88 mill levy. The special Item of increase this year will be under the head of maintenance and for this $30,000 la asked. This will practically cover the operations on Ter minal No. 4 and as the dock is ready and In operation will carry approxl mutely the outlay for the next year. It is the expectation of tbe commJe sloners to eliminate this item In the budget for 1923 on the basis of earning capacity and revenues ..from., -the ele vator and the piers at Terminal No. 4. Decrease in salaries on Terminals 1, 3 and 3 to the amount of 19500 Is ac counted for by the fact that each ter minal has increased its earning capac ity to such an extent that the docks are rapidly coming to a sustaining basis.
