Fined for .Bootleg giag L Perry pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to the manufacture of synthetic gin and was fined $200, with 30 days in which to pay it. Perry was arrested last May following a raid by federal prohibition officers on his place, resulting in con fllcting reports on from 15 to 24 bottles of finished product. Assistant United States Attorney Magulre -handled the prosecution. Kates on Fruits, Vegetables In Effect October 3 bouinern facinc company rates on vegetables and melons from California and Oregon points to Chicago, Missis sippi river and points west will be re duced October 8. The rates on beets, cabbage, carrots. onions, parsnips, potatoes, onion sets and turnips, in carloads, to Chicago, Missis sippi river points west have been re duced, according to J. H. Mulchay, gen eral freight agent from $1.25 ft to $1.10 per log pounds. Rates on other vegetables, tncludine cantaloupes ana melons, to Chicago and Mississippi river, have been reduced from 1 1.66 to $1.46, and to the Missouri river and points west the reduction is from $L58H to $1.39 per 100 pounds. Mulchay states that effective October 3 the eastbound rates on cocoanut and vegetable oils, also copra, imported from the Orient, will be made 75 cents per 100 pounds from Pacific Coast ports to Cin cinnati. Ohio, Chicago and points west The rate to Cincinnati will apply only on shipments forwarded via New Or leans or East St Louis In connection with the Southern Railway or the Louis ville,: Nashville railroad and via NeW Orleans In connection wife the Illinois Central railroad. The rates on domestic vegetable, cocoa nut and cottonseed oil produced locally and shipped to Eastern points, will be reduced, effective November 3, to the same figures that will apply on the Im ported oils. You should do so, for both the baking and broiling ovens. Ten minutes is an average allowance for the baking oven and five minutes for the broiling oven. This method involves no waste of gas, because if food is placed in a cold oven, the cooking will take lust so much longer, and the re sults will not be so good. If the recipe calls for a moderate oven, reduce the flame one-half at the end of ten minutes. For a quick oven keep burners lighted during all or nearly all of the baking. Also bear in mind that it is bet ter to bake in tin pans instead of sheet iron or .'agate pans. The iron absorbs the heat and is more liable to burn the contents at the bottom and sides before the bak ing is done.
