Debate on Ireland No decision will
be rendered by chosen judges in this eve
ning's debate on the Irish question in
Lincoln high school. The debaters, the
Rev. W. L, Brandon and E. A. Cantrell,
wish to leave the decision of the case en
tirely with the audience and request
that it be given on the merits of the
facts as presented, rather than the man
ner presented. Every angle of the ques
tion will be presented as in a courtroom
and the Jury will be the audience. The
debate will begin at 8 o'clock. Marshall

ters referred was appointed by Dr. Ed

church meeting Thursday night Dr. W.
T. McElveen will compare the methods
of healing used by Dr. Qulmby, Mrs.
Mary Baker Eddy, the New Thought
and the Emmanuel movements. He will
give illustrations of what he calls
"Christian Puychotherapy." ' The lec

McNary Runs Line

Nary left this morning for Washington,
expecting to be in his seat in the sen
ate on Monday morning next
The senator camo to Portland from
his hame at Salem Tuesday night and
during the evening conferred with rep
resentatives of various irrigation proj
ects who desired to present matters to
his attention having to do with the de
velopment of the arid lands of Eastern
Oregon. He was also besieged by Job
hunters who wanted to have him speak
a good word for them in behalf of their
ambitions to secure deputyships under
the different offices to be filled by new
appointees in the near future
Senator McNary has enjoyed his home
visit and gays he returns to Washing
ton rested and ready for the strenuous
days ahead at the coming session.

Allege Man Wrote
Letter to Self, in
CheckForgery Case
Harry J. Stranahan waa' arrested
Tuesday by Police Inspectors Tacka
berry, Wright and Korea on a
charge of attempting to obtain money
by forgery in a most unique man
ner. According- to a reported con
fession made by Strananan, the young
man had written letters to himself which
he had sent through the mail, the letter
enclosing a forged check purporting to
have been signed by A- Dupont" a sup
posed uncle. He would sharw the letter
80 a means of identification.
Officials of the local branch of the
Dupont Powder company were asked to
cash such a check but became suspicious
and. telegraphed the home office, learn
ing that exactly the same trick had been
played before.
Stranahan said, the detectives stated.
that he is wanted at Scranton. Pa, for
obtaining $1170 from a bank there and
in Los Angeles, where he said he had
obtained 200.

Nineteen bodies, one of them a Port
land boy, are scheduled to arrive in
Portland Thursday morning at 8:30
o'clock from overseas, the quartermaster
general's office has announced.

Woman Is Run Down
By Traffic Officer
Pursuing Speeder
Rose Martell, 64, who lives at 614 Sec
ond street suffered injurfles about the
head and left leg, possibly including a
fractured skull, when she was struck, at
First and Sheridan streets Tuesday aft
ernoon, by an automobile driven by Traf
fic Policeman A. A. Tauscher, who was
pursuing two speeding motorcyclists.
Mrs. Martell was struck by the rear
fender of the car as Tauscher swerved to
avoid hitting her. She was crossing the
corner obliquely, facing the direction
from which the officer was approaching.

Girl Arrested for
Selling Moonshine
When Patrolmen Russell and Burkhart
went to 674 Raleigh street with a search
warrant Tuesday afternoon they found
Louise Ferring, 19-year-old girl, market
ing 34 pints of moonshine. Her father
and mother were away from home and
the girl took full responsibilty. The police
were oi the opinion that the parents
let the arirl take, tha hlim hnninar that
she will be lightly fined on account of
her youth. She was booked on a charge
of violating the prohibition ordinance,
but was allowed to go on 3250 bonds.
