THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL; PORTLAND, OREGON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1821. 20 DR. SCHOL Z SEES E EVIL AS : ! .. r i . " DEFY TO COLLEGES DVORC a marked effect upon the world : 1814 saw th beginning: of our closer rela tionhip with world affairs." r v ' Dr. ScholU feels that now that Amer ican people have secured their liberty they feel It ia .something which will take care of itself and it is not neces sary to use It by active participation in the government created to give expres sion to this liberty. , 3 - Intimate analysis of present-day eco nomic 1 and social conditions was pre sented by Dr. Richard P. Schols, presi dent of Reed college. In an address be fore the Unitarian Laymen's league at the Church of Our Father, Monday night. I Dr. Schols commented on the fre quency of the appearance of young peo ple in the divorce courts. Questioning if this were not a challenge to the colleges. "Are not many of our. young people trying to substitute 'Jazs' for a common : Intellectual Interest?" demanded Dr. , Schols. "Are they not all too willing to let' the other fellow do their political and economic thinking, thereby missing one of the most worth-while. things In lifer : 8CHTRZ AS D BISMARCK often wonder what history would have recorded If Germany had sent Bismarck to America and had kept Carl flchurs In Germany." continued Dr. ' Sohols. Bismarck was the type to dis courage Individual political thought, and Bchur the absolute opposite. When' ever a majority of the citizens of i democracy allow a small group to do all their political thinking, the life blood of that democracy Is gone. We In the United States must realize that democ racy has obligations, that each must do his own political thinking, or else we are taking the form of democracy and losing . the substance. A great obligation rests on the colleges and newspapers. The colleges must train their students to take the lead ' In intelligent, active citizenship ; the newspapers must give complete, ac- ' curate and' unbiased newson which citi zens can, rely In forming their judg ments on economic and political ques- ; tlona. When a college graduate receives his diploma, he has not completed any thing ; he has merely received his pre liminary training for active and lntelll- . gent citizenship. The test of his college training ilea largely In what he does 1 with his citizenship." , TWO TE3DESCIES MARKED "The year 1890 marked the division line between two great tendencies In the United States, being approximately ' the end of the agricultural democracy and the beginning of the Industrial de mocracy. Up until 1890 lands open for homesteadlng In the West offered i means for a man with a pioneering In stlnct to secure a home and farm. After ' 1(90 the tendency was more towards centering population in- the cities as the homestead land was filled, and we be came more and more an Industrial de mecracy with a consequent change in problems. '"Jn spite of the fact 'that we had al ways regarded ourselves as an isolated . nation, thoughts and policies formulated in the United States, such as the Mon . , roe doctrine and the much abused phrase.
