at the opening this morning with deal-
ngs on a small scale. Mexican Petroleum
started 2Vi points lower at 02 and then

Great Northern was lower at 70.

WORKERS IN STEEL

By Gsy T. Rockwell
Special Camapaadaent of The Journal
Cleveland, Sept. 2. Although the lm
provement in business in 'this section.
especially In the steel industry. Is largely
one of mental 'attitude, there has been
noticeable increase in buying activity
and la the number of workers employed.
One of the large steel companies will
blow in one of Its furnaces late this
week after a complete shut down cf

have reduced prices 10 per cent under
those of last year and orders received
the last 10 days indicate the farmers
again have entered the' market. Several
of the motor car companies expect to
be kept busy all fall on closed car or
ders. Further auto price reductions are
expected. These are possible through
lower material costs and greater labor
efficiency, automobile men say.

WHEAT mEN PAY
DEBTS WITH CROPS
By Biek Smith
Special Comapoasdea of The JearasJ
Kansas City, Mo., Sept. t Business
in this section has not responded as was
hoped It would to the widespread mar
keting of wheat and favorable progress
of other crops. This is accounted for by
the fact that the farmers have been
deeply in debt and when these debts
have been liquidated little has remained
for new purchases. The farmers alao
feel that they receive proportionately
less for what they produce than they
are asked to pay for what they buy.
In this connection," said W. T,
Kemper, chairman of the board of one
of the mid-West's largest banks today
it would be better for business if more
attention were paid to prices than to
yields for generous harvests appear to
have aroused false hopes as tt trade
prospects.".
Coal men still complain of lack of
trade and declare this is not due to
summer slump but is because the buy
ers think the coal men are profiteers.
"If we tell the truth about the coal situ
ation." said H. N. Taylor, president of
the Central Coal A Coke company, today,
"the people say it is propaganda."
The Kansas City Chamber of Com
merce hopes to induce 30.000 merchants
in this territory to come here for a
"market week" beginning August 29.

CATTLE LOASS LIMITED
Chicago, Sept. 2. Bankers here as
sert that the $50,000,000 cattle loan pool
has made advances of less than 85,000,
000 and has commitment for about three
millions more. This sum, they say, has
gone to help the bankers and holders of
cattle paper who could nbt continue to
carry that burden indefinitely. Unques
tionably, they say, the entire amount
available will be used but the demand
for packing products is not strong enough
to sustain cattle prices. Retail meat
prices are slowly falling.
Northwest Is Facing
Better Times, Says
Advertising Expert
A decided improvement in business
conditions over the entire Northwest
has arrived, according to H. G. Stlbbs,
advertising manager Tor Carnation Milk
Products company, and president of the
Seattle Advertising club, a recent Port
land visitor. '
"As a rule, buying In all lines is be
ing done conservatively," said Mr.
Stibbs, "but a much greater volume of
sales can be seen over the correspond
ing season last year. Retailers are ad
hering closely to this policy: stocking
only two'or three products in each line,
but all of them noticeably widely ad
vertised. Turnover is much more rapid
than last year, showing Increased con
fidence of the buying public. The job
bers throughout the Northwest are less
given to speculation than heretofore,
which would indicate also that condi
tions In trading circles are fast assum
ing a normal aspect. The year 1922
will see us well on the road to complete
business recovery. .
"For the entire Northwest I can see
only prosperous times ahead. Present
indications are that in many liases of
trade the return to normal will be much
slower than in others; many, indeOl
may not note a change for the better."
