The senate committee on reclamation expects within two weeks to have a bill ready tor consideration of the secretary of the Interior and the farm loan board whereby loans may be made through the farm loan system on lands in reclama tion projects. This Is the announcement of Senator McNary, chairman of the committee, who. urged the senate not to try to legris late on this subject in connection with the farm credit bill, of which he had charge in the senate. Senator' Pittman of Nevada had offered an amendment to authorize loans subject to government Hens on reclamation projects, notwith standing the provision of the farm loan act that only first mortgages shall be taken for such loans. M'SAET EXPLAINS ATTITUDE Senator McXaryy said he hoped sena tors from Western states would not be discouraged over his inability to accept the Pittman amendment, which he de clared had not been sufficiently" consid ered. The subject should be taken up .independently, he said, and not made a rider on the agricultural credit bill, for experience has taught him that "the poorest legislation we get anywhere is thai which is written on the floor of the senate or house." Senator Pittman urged that his amend ment would not 'compel loans to be made ofl::recIaniation lands, but would .re move restrictions " which prevent loans being made, and that no danger would be incurred -tn permitting the farm loan bank directors to use their discretion in any case where they deemed the security sufficient in the case of patented lands. McNary expressed doubts about the practicability of the plan and foresaw legal difficulties. He said it would in volve delay to the farm credit bill if this were made a part of it, and that it should be left for consideration in a separate bill. Senator Ashurst of Arizona, who had proposed an amendment similar to the Pittman .proposal, said he was content to accept the assurance of McNary that the reclamation committee will take up the subject. The Pittman amendment was rejected without a roll call. Congressman Seeks' . Police Protection In Beauty Contest Washington, Aug. 25. (L N. S.) Rep resentative Manuel Herrlck of Okla homa, who has created a considerable uproar here by a "beauty contest" which he says he conducted to show how girls might be lured by means of newspaper contests, has asked the-local police for protectibn from Mrs. C. Melville Shorey. Herrlck Informed Police Inspector Grant that he formerly roomed with Mrs. Shorey and that she had letters which he wanted, and that he had fears for his safety because of the attitude that he claims has been taken against bis beauty contest stand. Mrs., Shorey visited Inspector Grant and told him that her young daughter Elizabeth had accompanied Herrick to numerous places of amusement and that she has received, a number of anony mous letters. Police Inspector Grant has refused to afford Herrick special police protection or interfere In the case. Increased Freights Are Suspended for , Another 60 Days Olympla, Wash., Aug. , 25. Increased freight rates proposed for Western .Washington have been suspended by the department of public works for an addi tional 60 days. The original 90-day sus pension expired today. . S. J. Henry, railroad freight agent for Washington, informed the department that, through oversight, the rates on oil and petroleum had been omitted in a supplemental tariff, published August 15, in effect putting these commodities back to the rates charged two years ! ago, much lower than the present. The de partment refused retroactive applica tion of an amendment reestablishing the increases over two years ago, plus an 'additional five and one half cents per hundred, but ' permitted ' the increased rat to go into effect on September 1.
