Prices are falling ; almost . da Jv, on both the Portland and Chicago markets, -' and yet nobody seem to care to buy. -At Uie present rate of decline fl wheat wilt be a reality before the end of tha week. ' i Portland market started the week at (1.13 on hard white and closed S cents lower. This is a marked contract to , the condition a year ago" when there was practically no material change for a week. A year ago hard white was quoted on Monday at $2.28 and on Sat urday at (2.30 and during the. week follow ing reached a high level of (2.35. Harvest is 'little earlier this year than last season, but Like a thunderbolt out of a clear sky came the announcement late Saturday afternoon that the. Portland butter market would advance S cents at the opening of business Monday Morn ing. Portland creamery men were of the opin ion earlier in the day that the price here was as high as is justified, but they were forced to make the move when 8eatt3c announced that it would advance Monday. Seattle's new price on prints will be 47e and Portland's will be: 46c For butterfat delivered at Portland 4c per Pound will be paid. Creameries are not quot ing a country station price at present. It is interesting to note that a year ago Saturday batter was 69c In Portland, and a' year ago xtonoay it was eic. Iwniu the same 'week last year an additional advance of 3 cents was made, bringing the price ud to 64c. Range of butter prices during the past 'week in the principal markets follows: j I Port. Chi. For the. first time in month good conservative men ere willing - to assert the parribility of higher rmea levels. Speculators new very Brucb to this opinion and millers weighing market condi tions feel eonviacrd of the strength of the titua- ben. There has been a very heavy movement -of winter wheat and it has been absorbed at P re in in m in Chicago,' Kansas City and St. Lottie snd at advanced prjeea. There ia a big volume inwr mnuu ivr umit mm in ut mumw there are no stocks of American flour; as one correspondent says, not a spoonful," tiovern- n reserve of wheat have been finally v heoftted as noted in a cable from our London manager. Gulf bookings of flour have been heavy as compared with any recent movement. 1 Russia Will Not Expert , j Exporters are taking wheat and the f trade seems much impressed with KUSMa.' famine In seven governments, where large wheat imports are neeeary for food and seed. The true situa tion in Russia is quite a shirt from the hope ut exports from that country which waa indulged tn tm to a abort Use ago. In domestic markets, the lona. continued comervaUzm cleaned wp flour stocks in a voca tive way and domestic trade has stimulated flour production so that most nulls are running cms to war tirao output. . t Demand for floor aeenae to have sprung m from an markets, and apparently has not yet retched Ua limit, because of the wiisei istfam which buyers have adopted sine the period o deyreasion. Tet many big bakers are satisfied with prtseiit levels and. the possibility of ad vsiHng markets. The crop situation has added to this senti ment. Tho July govern ment forecast of 809, OOO.0AA bushels was Reduced on August 1 to 757.00fl.0O0. reduction of ever 50.000.006 bnsbeK The) movement of sprW wriest is slow. The quality ia reported fine. ' Canada 's crop y only a moderate outturn with possibilities of some further damage. Along with this there waa the usual "market gossip" of rust, which has do substantial bearing -on the situation, except to aid in forming sentiment. . , print Wheat a Facter There ia a shortage cf potatoes and tcblce to help the wheat situation. Three things are all pointed to as reasons for good buying foundation. Buying is in pragresa in a better way than many hoped for, with mills and ex porters taking wheat, and flour buyer showing real faith ia the price levels. It ia pointed out that the spring wheat move ment is yet to come, but the ability of the market to absorb the winter wheat movement without big market accumulations is pointed to as a wholesome index to the strength of- the situation. - ' The early movement of spring wheat in volume is being watched aa a factor to hold levels down. - , - . Farmers and poultry raisers are culling their flocks, and , as a result the market is flooded It appears this year as though some farmers have waited too long before culling, as out of a shipment of 225 hens received by see dealer. only three eggs were found in a 24 hour period. The ssme condition is true regarding other shipments, it is said. Market is good on heavy bens and broilers. Prices are expected to remain, steady, in these lines. Dressed Meat Moving Slowly Call for dressed meats waa slow during the past week. Top quality stock . raaved - fairly good, but the market was spoiled by- too much rough, heavy stuff. Fsnner should exercise more care in raising and killing their veal and hogs and they will receive better prices, as top blockers always bring a premium over the , ordi nary animal. ' ; Peach Prices Higher Peach prices will be higher the first of the week unless the market can find -a place ' to buy cheaper fruit. All growers are demanding higher prices. , Peaches are costing 1. 00 per box laid down in Portland, , which means; that the consumer will have to pay (2. Tomato Price Shattered .; j . ' This was especially true in the foreign section of. Front street. j r; Peak of Pear Season Her Pesk of pear production is here. The com ing week will see the best pears and the most liberal supply. Prices will not be so low - this season aa in other seasons, as the crop ; is a little short, but the fruit canning . trade j win have to take the pears at the pnces asked, as pears are more plentiful and cheaper than peaches. - . 1. ! The only change is one due to the exhaustion of uppHea in some particular grade and not to a slackening of the demand. Some big houses have sold eonsiderabl wool, but are refusing to give out particulars.
