THE OREGON SUNDAY JOURNAL, PORTL AND, SUNDA MORNING. AUGUST 21, isn. 4 A. DAYS SLAVE AFTER RECALLED BY NEGRO MAM Y OLD' NEGRO WOMAN TELLS STORY OF EMANCIPATION 'Humor, Pathos and Tragedy-Are ' Woven " Into Narrative Vritten v by One Who Was Born as Serf. s i By Robert W. Osbora - 'Not niiur years Boat elapse before, the laet of the living who can- remember. - and who partici pated in, the etimng Civil wax period will p- on.' Of hetoricaT interest and throwing liffht on the old alive dart is the following story by a colored . janitor, lira. Maggie Palmer, commonly known i aa ."Old Annuo" in Houston.- Texas, written' for Mias France L. Barnes, instructor in Jdnglfem for many ;r at thc'Kentoa acbool fat Portland. Old Auntie wrote the "ntemoirs" t the request of Miss. Bamer when the latter iii an exchange teacher in Houston' from Port land during the year a11-t8. -Tno story. id. from rU insight into th. -.events , of . the -time, ia remarkable fox its hnraor and retisious sentiment.. The fact that it is well written, proves , the eagerness with which the negro "mammy" nSust hare applied herself in those achoot daya . She so humorously describes. -Auntie waa bom to 1834- Her story fe published a she wrote JM,-?a . - f: A very kind lady wants a sketch of jny life. What could I say ot Interest to be even" read by her?'r Yet, as my mind wanders back it brings afresh the scenes and incident of my youth even the little hut where I first saw the light -of day many, many years ago, and the "big house where Ole Missus and all the --white folks lived.' Mother being house '-woman. I was born and brought, up at 'the Big House and thus had the advan tage of the -other little slaves who were 'raised, down at the "nigger quarters. H "Be they ever so humble, yet how deaf Ho my eart"ar the scenes of my-childhood.": How often have I gone down that old shady lane to the little school jhouse to take young Missus her lunch, . and while she would enjoy eating it 1 ' i j tnn all the words on any craps of books I might happen to find ion the school grounds. Miss Mary would dinner and I often wonder why biscuits and sausage do. not , eat as sweet and juicy as in those good I -old days. - Just about this period in my j-jife word came from a Tankee general by the, name of Christler to let all the 'colored -people know that they were free. .(Old Auntie said that negroes con tused Christler with the second coming :tt Christ) tANKEES MAKE A CALL J. The morning after hearing this good news, hearing a peculiar noise, I went 'to the do r and looked out to see what i-was the trouble- Good heavens ! I ran fright into a company of Yankees. I 'never saw men get around, so fast in all 'my born days as they did. They seemed ;to pour right down out of the sky. They ;ran up and down the trees like squirrels. AAnd it was goodbye to all those good .old sausage meat and biscuits, tor they jjijst did leave the ground for us to stand on and water in the well everything lse. went when they did. They even itook Old Master as far, as the ford, one fmile ott. to kill him. To give him a chance, for life, they gave him a very t-hard language to read. If he failed to 'do so they swore they would kill him. but he read it and thus saved his lire. I Well do I remember that cold April morning when he came slipping back "through the woods, clad only in his socks fritnd underwear. Tnere waa no gooa not Kffa.tA. c-i him. so mother made' him 8ome sage tea. i COLORED FOLK I3T t XL AT E Y AB.D v U Next i year my folks moved off to themselves to try and paddle their own i ? canoe.- traveling all the way from Ala- fbama to South- Carolina in a one-horse rviwn. i We camped one night right in the .middle of a battlefield, with graves fxt dead men as far. as you could see. PMost of our band of pilgrims slept by a ? great log heap, fire that night, but I ' f crept up in the "back of the wagon and ,4 tried to watch the ghosts with one eye ' t -while I slept wnn me otner. ' Well. I'll never forget that night if I I live hundred years. The next morning a freight train came through a wood not 5 very far off and as I had never seen one Lthejr could not convince me that it would .Knot run over me though more than , a mll away. I was just as green as a ; 1 gourd ! After we got located,, we were all go :Jlng to work one day except a little brother,' who was left at home to look : after things and string beans for dinner. 'We came in from work tired and hungry : ronly to find that little brother , had bor- : rowed, a needle -and thread and had . i strung- the beans on it and hung them I up on a naiL J. SCHOOL DAYS i'- The next day mother called us to her ; and said, "Chillun. I'm gwine to send yon all to school jes' like white Chilian. - v My. how this did fiU my heart with ? Joy! I just cried for gladness.. This ' t was the one hope of my life. Mother told r us about many great white ladies and gentlemen who got all their greatness , through book-learning. Well do I remember the first day I V attended a real school, back in 1866. I went in and sat near the door, for I '.'was somewhat afraid of school, and ..should anything unusual happen I in , tended to run right out the door. .This i was not necessary, however. for the d teacher was a white lady from Massa chusetts, and very kind. The thing I ? did not like was that she did not let me : t have a lot of books -like my young mis tress had at the yellow school house , back in Alabama. ' Instead of books she . gave me a large a-b-c card. I went hone that evening and after hunting i sne .BeignDornooa over succeeaea in col- i, locting quite a number of books and went rinarching- into school with them -next morning. My teacher told me -that ' inust first learn how to spell and then ; she would let me get some books. ,GBOWS SHOE LEATHER AND HALTS ' ; I ; also' noticed that -the glrlaHSad ' on nice high' top shoes while I wore only brogans, sa I had to think how to remedy this shortness of ! shoe leather. I got a " ! . f pair of old high! top shoes and cut the ' . . tops off and sewed .them f as neatly as " I oould onto, my - brogans .- Well, I wore j them just one day, and the children did v the rest..- , ' - Some of the girls hair was much ' j 1 longer than mine. I did not like-this. i '! Miss Mary, I remembered, always wore t long curls away down, her back, and now I I saw many of my schoolmates doing I, i the same thing. I got busy and pieced i mine with a piece ot horsehair and had a nice ' long braid hanging way - down I my back. I had to . stay home -a- few I days after that hair fixing or break up : j, the school, for just to look at little Mg i ' gie made teacher and all laugh. V WINS fBIZE FOB LZASNLNa i Soon I commenced to learn some sense I and to see that this Jennie Wren imi- tation of a canary would never profit me i f anything, but that getting my lessons weir ana inus curavmxe xn mma wouw, so-1 just got down' to business.- It was not many months before I had iron the "Pilgrim's Progress" for standing at the head -of .the class in spelling for three months, and the way I could do my sums and commit poetry my teacher said was Vf - wonderful. ' y -: . Vr I Just about this time a Korthern fam- : J Ily came to our city to assist-tn teach f ! ing colored ' children. After several v; .terms they went back. North, taking me wtta them.
