Lonergan, Mrs. D. J. Coman. The thirty-ninth annual Internationa supreme convention of the order will be formally opened Tuesday, August 2, in J San Francisco. Prominent Portland knights who will accompany the supreme officers to the convention are: F. J. Lonergan. P. J. Hanley and R. J. O'Neill, F. P. Harter, Patrick Bacon, also J. H. Peare of La Grande, state deputy, and F. A Davey of Salem, district deputy. The people of Sa lem probably know lees about the state library and its operations th .n residents of any other part of the state Three hundred thousand persons in Oregon,. living under "pioneer conditions," who have no ether book sotAce from which to draw, are dependent upon ' the state library 10,000 of whom are regis tered patrons who regularly use the mall service; to obtain volumes and pay all postage themselves. These were some of the figures quoted by Miss Cornelia Marvin, state librarian, when she addressed the Salem .Rotary club at its regular weekly luncheon at the Marion hotel Wednesday. "The Oregon state library,' Miss Mar vin pointed out "is undoubtedly one; of the most active in the United States, doe to the fact that la other states, with the possible exception of a few in the south, there are but comparatively few persons yet living under ploneer. conditions." The Oregon li brary functions chiefly in two ways, Mies Marvin said. It first attempts to reach those readers wfco have no local library from which to draw and its second purpose is to perform aupple mentary work to those libraries of the State which are inadequate to. the de mands of its patrons. Most of the li braries of Oregon, she explained, with the exception of those hi Multnomah couniy, are small and merely serve as clearing houses. Books of the "heavier' variety which these small libraries 'fur nish their readers are, for the most part secured from the state library'. The state library. Miss Marvin ex plained, rarely does what she termed an "individual business," except in dealing with those persons who cannot . reach another library.
