Third Floor, Wolfe Co. . ft Now Comes a Clearance That Respects Neither i I Social Side of Tennis Tourney Inspires Gaiety By Blen Hntchison SOCIAL activities for the most part have centered about the tennis- tour nament in progTass at the courts of the Multnomah Amateur Athletic club dur ing the past week. The tea hours have been gay and followers or the matches have been delightfully entertained each afternoon. The tennis ball Friday eve ning at the club was the closing func tion of importance for the week's fes tivities. Aside from the doings of the visitors in the city during the tourna ment diversions have been confined to a few informal teas and luncheons, with several dances for the younger members of the social contingent who are still in the city for vacation days. Pew pretentious functions are recorded among the list of midsummer entertain ments this year and the weekend finds Portland families flocking to beaches and mountains for a brief outing, while the resorts along the Columbia river highway, easily accessible to city motor ists who have little time to spend, are crowded with visitors. Mrs. Lee Hoffman and Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand C Smith entertained 100 of the younger members of the social con tingent at their country home in Barnes road. Unusual decorations planned un der the direction of Mr. Hermann Rosse made the Hoffmann house attractive for the occasion. A large number of guests returned from the beach to be present for the affair. Mrs. Lucius Allen Lewis and daugh ter. Miss Clementine Lewis, and Miss Elisabeth Boyd of San Francisco, who is their house guest, left the city for EcoLa the latter part of the week and will spend the remaining weeks of the summer there. Miss Boyd has been a guest in Portland several times before this summer. Miss Louise Boyd, daughter of Dr. John H. Boyd of Chicago. HL. has ar rived In Portland to spend the summer, and is the guest of Mrs. Estes Snede cor. Miss Boyd will spend some time with Mrs. Allen P. Noyes and with her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Henry Boyd. A party made up to enjoy an outing at the Snowshoe club- on Mount Hood over this week end, includes Mr. and Mrs. Victor A. Johnson and Mr. . and Mrs. Edmund L. Devereaux and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lang and Miss Fannie Roseel of Bordentown. N. J, who- is the guest of Mrs. Devereaux. . Dr. and Mrs. William & Ladd of New York are guests of the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Ladd, for a short time. Mrs. Theodore B. Wilcox has returned to the city from New- York, where she has been for several weeks. Mrs. William H. Ehrman has as her house guests1 at her summer home at Seaside. Mrs. Ruth Schweitzer and her daughter. Miss Marian Schweitaer. Mrs. James D. Hart asked s few friends in for an informal afternoon of bridge Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Charles a Berg enter tained at a dinner dance at the Benson hotel Thursday evening. Ernest Swigert Engaged to Wed Duliith Belle AN ANNOUNCEMENT of interest is that of the engagement of Miss Frances Turrlsh of Duluth. Minn., to Mr. Ernest G. Swigert of this city. The news was told informally at a supper party given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam S. Wheeler Friday evening, pre ceding the dancing party for which Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand C. Smith were hosts at their home in Barnes road. Miss Tnrrish has been a visitor in Portland on several occasions with her father, who has business interests in the West, and during her stay in the city she has made many friends among the memoers 01 tne social contingent. Mr. Swigert is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest F. Swigert of this city. He was graduated from Harvard and is a mem ber of the University club and of Waver- ley Country club. In Portland he is sales manager of the Electric Steel foundry, Mrs. Cyrus A. Dolph was hostess for a tea Tuesday honoring her grand daughter. Miss Louise Dolph. who has recently returned from school in Phila delphia. Guests included a group of the younger girls. At the tea table were Mrs. Reade Ml Ireland, Mrs. Curtis Bailey, Mrs. John Cabeen Beatty and Mrs. Erie F. Whitney. Assisting about the rooms were Miss Jane Talbot. Miss Alice Effinger, Miss Jean Skene and Miss Anne Elisabeth Warren. Mrs Alan Green and Miss Katherine Ainsworth presided at the punch bowL , Friends of Mrs. Raymond Coarsen will be pleased to know that she is fast re covering from a recent operation. Mrs Coarsen and two children, accompanied by Mrs. Edgar E. Coarsen, will lesve San Francisco July 21 for Hilo, Hawaii, where they will be domiciled in a home which has . been built daring Mrs. Coar- sen's visit of eight months in Portland.
