Flames, ap parently creeping beneath the dock on which the Astoria Box company stood, reached the dry kilna of the plant about 6 o'clock Thursday, after the fire department had relaxed vigilance over the blaze, which earlier in the day destroyed the saw mill portion of the plant with a loss that may ran to $150,000. The new outburst of flames seised upon the dry structure of the kilns and their contents, rapidly consumed those structures and damaged the north end of the box factory before the fire fight ing apparatus, recalled to the scene from the stations, could cope with it The latest outbreak of the fire will raise the total loss previously estimated by F. W. McGregor, president of the company, by several thousand dollars. While a number of firemen were re maining at the mill mopping up the last apparent flames, the spectators and engines had left the scene before the kilns were ignited. Only a drenching by the heavy rains of the past few days is credited with preventing a total loss to the entire plant 'With the first blase. The wind was light and the wet exterior of the box factory resisted the flames, which swirled toward it from they seeth ing sawmill. It employed about 150 men. wno win oe iaie temporarily at least. Decision as to the rebuilding of the mill will not be reached for some daya The plant Is located on the waterfront in the eastern part of the city. Street repairing on trestles in the vicinity im peded the work of" the firemen. The street over which all westbound traffic enters the city also waa in danger, as it is of wooden construction. An overheated boxing in the headsaw is thought to have caused the blase. The whole sawmill was a seething furnace a few minutes after the fire was dis covered and before the first apparatus arrived. Manager W. P. O'Brien of the plant was out of the city, but W. F. McGregor and Charles H. Callendar, members of the company, were on hand directing the fire fighting. The lose is partially cov ered by insurance.
