THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, OREGON FRIDAY, JULY 1, 1L STILLMAN HEARING Off UNI JULY 13 Poughkeepsie, N. T., July L, 3L N. S.) The Stlllman divorce hear Ings were adjourned shortly after noon today until July 12. James A. Stlllman, the multi-millionaire ex-banker suing his wife, Mrs. "Flfl" Potter Stlllman, was not put on the witness stand again today and it was announced by his counsel that, ac cording to present plans, be would not be called again when the hearing is resumed. BARE SIS USED F MANY YEARS AGO Coathmed From Pas One) Seattle Bank With Total Deposits of $11,828,251 Closes Seattle, July 1. fU. P.) The board of directors of the Scandinavian-American bank announced late last night that the bank had suspended. Efforts to effect a merger between the Scandinavian-American and three other Seattle banks failed at the last minute. The bank, according to the statement of condition rendered at the last offi cial call, had a capital and surplus of $1,256,838 and total deposits of 111,828, 251. Shrinkage of values during the last year and abnormal deposit de creases is declared to have caused the bank's suspension. It is in the hands of the supersivor of banking. The bank has 5000 commercial ac counts and 21,000 savings accounts.. Burke, not a senator or governor, but it was interesting. Billy Porter, distinguished and patri otic American bank burglar, who had killed two or three men and fled to Eng land, and subsequently died a convict in the German salt mines, stood Just outside the ropes in John L. Sullivan's corner. He was neatly dressed, silk hat, beauti ful overcoat with velvet collar and big pockets. Both hands were in his pockets. Before the fight began he tilted his bands upward and two ugly little round points stuck up inside the cloth. "I am here to see fair Play for Sulli van," said Porter. "I suppose you Mitchell men know what I have got in my pocket" The Mitchell men. first class thugs and carefully' chose nknew well that Porter had his two' "guns' ana would use them. They behaved nicely, aban doning their plan to break into the ring if things went badly for Mitchell. Those details from the ancient past let you know that you have missed fights more romantic than the fight of tomor row. How the heart of savage, uncivilized, brutal men responds to brutality ! All Rome poured out to see gladiators mur der each other, or to see religious ques tions settled by throwing heretics to wild beasts. The rabble poured out from the city and ran along the roadside hooting es the noblest soul ever born on earth was scourged toward the hill called Gol gotha, meaning the skull, there to be murdered. And later, in His name, crowds poured out to see one kind of Christian burned alive by some other kind of Christian, or Jews burned by both kinds of Christians. - A hundred men in a hurry. Not one will stop te see what ails a crying child. But the 100 will stop to see two boys fight, or watch the terrier tear a rat set free from a cage. The-names that everybody knows are fighting names, from Alexander to Foch. The monuments in the parks, the world over, are fighting monuments. t And tomorrow 90,000 human being, will go out to see a prise fight. And each, with a delightful lack of any sense of humor, would unhesitatingly announce himself or herself "intelligent and civ ilised.'' . tr- . We are barbarians with a veneer of culture so thin that you can't see it, and the Dempsey-Carpentier fight proves it. But don't worry about the fight, worry rather about yourself if the fight inter ests you. A man 'breaks out in spots of a certain kind. That means small pox. Not the spot, but the meaning, is important. Tomorrow's fight is nothing. What it means is a good deal. In one way it is encouraging, for you may hopefully ask, "If the . human race has achieved such wonders while still In, a state of barbarism what will it not achieve in millions of years of real civil ization that are ahead of it. Chilberg to Face Trial Tacoma, Wash., July 1. (U. P.) J. E Chilberg. director of the failed Scandinavian-American bank of Tacoma and at one time president of the Seattle bank of the. same name, returned to this city today from New York and surren dered himself for trial under charges in connection with the failure. Five indictments against Chilberg were returned by the county grand jury here some time ago. Chilberg will be formally arraigned on July 9. One indictment charges him with borrowing $10,000 without a reso lution of the board of directors, two with borrowing $2500, one for SSO00 and an other for knowingly permitting a di rector to borrow from the bank without proper security. Chilberg was released on $35,000. that part of the Snake river sone within the state of Oregon. Portland has a rate 10 per cent lower than Astoria to and from the whose of the Snake river zone. KATES ARE EXPLAINED Vancouver has a rate 10 per cent lower than Fuget Sound or Astoria to and from that portion of the Snake river sone which lies within the state of Ore gon. Vancouver has rates on a par with Puget Sound to and from that portion of the Snake river sone within the state of Washington. Astoria has a rate 5 per cent higher than Puget Sound to and fromthe Wash ington portion of the' Snstke -river sone and rates on a. parity with fuget Sound to and from the Oregon portion of the Snake river zone. The complex tangle created by the or der of the Washington department of public works and by the railroads' at tempt to obey it, will be straightened at onpe. it is said, by the issuance of a mandatory order rrom the interstate commerce commission. The mandatory order would instruct the railroads to make both interstate and intrastate ap plication of the Columbia basin decision. BEARS AGAIN SELLERS OF HEAVY BLOCKS OF MEXICAN OILS BASIN RATE DECISION LARDNER DENIES HE'S TO 'LAY DOWN (CostJansd Fmn Pass 1.) GOING IN MODIFIED EFFECT (Continued Frost Pas One) rate structuae of the Pacific Northwest is shattered. Portland's largest opportunity for growth consistent with natural advant ages is realized. The exceptional chance given this city by geographic location for Northwest port leadership is at last translated into concrete terms. The fruits of Portland's greatest vic tory in the competitive contest with Se attle are within grasp. The people of the interior sone are added to the upper ports of the Colum bia as recipients of the dividend thus paid on the great public possession, the Columbia. HEW FIELD ADDED Vancouver, Wash., Will be added to Portland and the interior as a bene notary as soon as tne "tempest in a teapot" raised by the Washington de partment of public works (public serv ice commission) has been quieted by an anticipated mandatory order from the in terstate commerce commission. Had it not been for the eleventh-hour ruse of the Washington body, Van couver would be in en joyn.ent of the new rates on equal terms with Portland. The rates between Portland, Vancou ver and the zone south of Snake river would be 10 per- cent less than between this sone and either Puget Sound or Astoria, The preferential would be ob tained by lowering the rate to Portland and Vancouver 5 per cent and by in creasing the rate to Puget Sound and Astoria 5 per cent iyCBEA.SE SUSPENDED The order of the Washington depart ment of public works, however, suspend ed for 90 days the S per cent increase to Puget Sound on intrastate rates, or rates wholly-within the state of Wash ington. Its action also suspended Van couver's benefit from the Interstate com merce commlsion's decision so far as shipments within the state of Washing ton might be concerned. As the matter stands: Portland today has a rate 5 per cent lower than Puget Sound to and from that portion of the Snake river zone which lies within the state of Washing ton. Portland has a rate 10 per cent lower than Puget Sound to and from word press and tell him what it meant. Then my brother disguised himself like a fifty dollar fight fan and set on my neck hollering frog and yellow slacker while I wrote a 1000 words with my mouth shut, I eat a pretty good lunch, but practically no supper as Thursday is" Amelies day out.; Friday afternoon, which the traffic police has asked me to not name the exact time, I will cross the Rubicon from Forty- second street to Weewakan and drive to South Orange to a friend of mine named Harry Heneage. the football ref eree and expect to eat a big dinner there, as his little woman sets a mean table and will retire early and leave Saturday a. m. for the -30 acres of boils. UGLY RUMOR BEXIID There has been two or three nasty rumors spread around in the past couple days which I wish to take these means to deny them. One of them was I had a break with my manager on account of a hysterical letter which I wrote home from Atlantic City. I wish to say that what I said in that letter was that I had drank a bottle of liquid which, my friends said was real beer but It wasn't real beer and I knew it wasn't real beer both before and after I had drunk it. and I confessed that I had drank and the confession was ac cepted In the half of one percent spirits in which it was made Another rumor was that I was going to lay down in. this fight and not write my best and that some of my dearest friends was betting that I would write a rotten story, t In reply to this kind of loose talk. I will sky that I never laid down on a story in my life and may be one or two of. them has been rotten, but not because I wasn't trying, and I will write this story with the same Idear in mind as I always have when I write a story, namely, to end it as soon as possible. TO REMAIN NEUTRAL Now as far as the fight itself Is con cerned, I am going to it as a neutral just like I said two weeks ago, and nothing I have saw at the two training camps has caused me to favor either one or the other of the two rival gladia tors or care which of them wins. But I will make another hysterical confession, namely, that If the training season was to run a couple weeks longer and a few more feminine and semi-feminine Journalists was to go out and see Carpentier and write 3000 words about his eyelashes and nostrils I am afraid I would have to start pulling earnestly for Jack to perform a major operation on Oeorgie's Greek profile. Smith Special Correspondent of The Journal Boston, July 1. Leading bank ers in New England declared today conditions showed a slow but steady betterment. The credit tuation is improving and there is growing confidence in the steadi er commodity prices. Great progress has been made in liquidat ing inventories and many concerns. which a few months ago were . be lieved to be headed for business dif ficulties, have been tided over. There is more activity shown in cot ton, wool, hides, leather and shoes. Manufacturing of metal articles and paper is at a low ebb, while less ac tivity is shown in shipbuilding and lumber. High-priced luxuries at pres ent are in small demand. The bousing situation -is shewing some improvement. Crops are in fine condition throughout New England, with a plentiful supply of fresh vege tables at low prices. In manufacture of cotton goods, mills masting ging hams, percales, sheets, pillow rases and branded bleached muslins are working at capacity. Salem. Or.. July L Through arrange ments completed by State Treasurer Hoff at a conference with Salem bank- rers Thursday night, necessity for the indorsement of state warrants "not paid for want of funds." due to de pletion of the general fund, has been eliminated. These warrants will be taken care of by local banks at their face value, saving to the holders the discount otherwise deducted. The arrangement, which will involve the use of approximately $500,000 be tween now and the time the general fund is replenished next November, is said to mean a saving of between 812.000 end $18,000 to the stats which would otherwise have been required to pay Interest on these warrants at the rate "of 6 per cent per year.
