13, THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND.-. OREGON FRIDAY. JUNE i, KZl. SNAP IN FISH IS OFFERED IN TRADE Bed snapper' fish la considered one of the ocean's best offerings but In a spe cial drive to gt the public here mora renerally acquainted -with the offerings, sales are being made as low as a cents a potind for; this week. There is no profit whatever at this price but retail ers say they are trying: to stimulate the demand for the- deep sea product. Fresh salmon is In somewhat- better : supply locally but most of the stock is imported from outside the state.' .. Very little Columbia river product is "avail able ' ' .J -,- - ! ; - There Is plenty of halibut available and liberal stacks of shad are offering. For the latter there Is little demand as the general public has not yet awakened to the fact that they are missing some thing. - - : Chickens are higher in the retail mar kets because of a scarcity and advanced Quotations at wholesale. Eggs are inclined to sell a trifle lower in some downtown markets. This is fol lowing the wholesale decline. The Yam bill market quoted -a rise of 2c. : Pie cherries are now at their beat and It the public wants quality and at the right price, now' is the time to buy. f Strawberries are ; now so low that growers debate whether to gather them, Quality is not quite as good as it was a week ago, but it will not be better this season. . j . Raspberries are selling slightly lower but next week will be the time to can both raspberries and loganberries. This is the time to purchase cherries as they, are at ; their lowest points for the season. -: '. -'::'-':'''. -Wholesale prices on meats have been generally r reduced -recently; but retail butchers are making no change what ever. There is more or less talk' among some producers pi inducing the public to cooperate in the selling of meats and thereby: secure their requirements at lower prices than private dealers are forcing the public to pay. .
