Lucy Rosattl, aged 15, early today waylaid Guy De Peso, aged 48, a block - from) his home In Chicago Heights, and shot him twice. De Peso, the father of several children, died later ina hospital. The wisp of a girl, according to the story she told the police, stepped from a doorway directly into the path of De Peso. Her cheeks were deathly pale and her eyes blazed with fury. - Tou wronged me !" she hissed. "And yesterday to the judge you lied I Pray to God, Giuseppe, for now is your time to die!" j . . Terror possessed the man and he screamed a desperate appeal to the . girl to spare his I life. But she, instead, whipped a revolver from her dress and .fired twice. The man dropped to the Sidewalk. The girl then wentto her home a few doors away. She had waited for Xe Peso almost all .-night. ' Yesterday the girl went before a Chi cago Judge and complained that De Peso had - taken liberties ' with her, against her will. Brought into court, De Peso denied this. He was released on $2000 bonds. That he had not been kept in jail, coupled with De Peso's denial and what to her was dishonor, decided the girl to take the law the law of her native Palermo into her own hands. -AH of last night," she told the police, in broken English, "I waited for him there in the doorway. Coward that he was he did not return home. But this morning ah, t then I saw him coming, creeping; creeping, down the street with the silent stealth that brings the dawn, trying to avoid seeing me. But he crept directly to me and death. "And I am glad, happy that I have done this. He wronged nie !" ' Marriage licenses Issued r, Eugene, June 23. Marriage licenses have been Issued to John W. Washington, June 22. (U. P.) Effort to solve the mystery of the vanishing ships"-today were cen tered " on attempts to find the sea marauders who ' are ! believed ; to have boarded the schooner Carroll A. peering and made prisoners of her crew. ' ;r "' '' Airplanes may be called upon to solve the mystery of the "vanished fleet, Of ficials of the department - of commerce today were considering asking the army or navy for planes to patrol the. little frequented stretches of coast near Cape Hatteras for some trace of the merchant vessels which have mysteriously van ished there. 1 ' " - ' Meanwhile " coastguard vessels ' were slipping in and out of coves and inlets near the cape in hope' of picking up some clue -a bit of wreckage or a note which might have been left by some of the crews of the vanished vessels. ' : If plates raided the ships and mur dered or captured the crews, as some officials believe, ; they must . have left some i trace along the: shore. The dis appearances extend over several months and a raiding vessel would have to have some base for ; operations along the shore. . . '. A list of 20 vessels which have disap peared in the last few months was made up at the commerce department today, SHIPS COMPLETELY VANISH : Five of the vessels, or possibly six, were near Cape Hatteras when they went down. While the number of ..vessels which have vanished is not unusual, the fact that no trace has been found of them and that so many were last heard from near the same spot. - is unusual. If they had blown up, ran aground or even captlzed, some bit of wreckage would float ashore which would explain their fate.. ': ' $ . The sand stranded schooner - Carroll A. Deering, which beached on Hatteras with sails full set. was gone 'over again by government investigators. : ! "We might as well 4 have searched a painted ship upon a painted ocean for sight of the vanished crew," said one of the men in his report, s ' The mystery ship is filled with sand. Seagulls are using the beams that sup ported the great ship clock as a roosting place, he reported. IXO WRECKAGE POC3TD i Not an oar. not - a bit of driftwood from the other vessels which have joined the: phantom squadron of -the deep was discovered. ; These ships are' the Russian ; bark Albyn that sailed out of the Norfolk capes into oblivion ; the Spanish steamer Yute that wirelessed for i help while north of Cape . Hatteras, ' and when nearby vessels rushed to the .location given they found nothing; the American steamer Hewitt that vanished off the cape about the same time the Deering drifted crewless to shore, and the Wil liam O'Brien, which disappeared north of the cape. On the theory that If any .of the men are still alive they will return to their old haunts, detectives have looked up every address given in the ships' arti cles of two of the missing vessels. : George E. Market Is Hard Hit By Harvey's Speech, Says Boger Babson v i. .: v ' '- I Cleveland, Ohio, -June 22. (TJ. j P.) "Ambassador Harvey's May 19 speech broke' the stock market. If It isn't soon checked you may expect repudiation by President Harding of Harvey and Har vey's recalL";; ::-.-::y- v-vy-This was the statement made .today by Roger Babson. noted statistician. ' Babson was here to address the Inter national Kiwanis club convention. . American financiers had been living In hope that the Harding administra tion would eupport some sort of League of Nations, ; Babson continued. This hope had a strengthening effect on the market. And when Harvey, on May 19, in London cut the ropes, the effect was immediate. -That Harding knew what Harvey was going to say is assumed, and I be lieve correctly so.
