MONDAY, JUNE 13, 1821. THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL; PORTLAND, OREGON. SEEK BLACMD F New York. June 18. -(I. N. S.) The greatest blackhand roundup the polyfe have undertaken In thi city in rif&ny years was under way today as a result of the murder, of 6-year-old Giuseppe Vafotta, whose body was found In the Hudson river after the parents had failed to pay $2500 ransom. ' Ten men are already under arrest and the police said they expected to make other . arrests later in the vday. The criminals who killed little Giuseppe be cause his parents were too poor to pay the ransom are believed by the police to be Sicilians. ' According; to the police records, this Is the- flrrit time on record that black- hand kidnapers in New York have put a child to death for the non-payment of -ransom. The Italian squad of the police , department Is j under orders to -run down every member of the gang, for the murder of the Varotta boy indicates that the blackhanders are becoming bolder In their efforts to extort money through crime. Salvatore Varotta and his wife, par ents of the slain boy, are in a state of collapse. Little Giuseppe .disappeared May 24. The physicians who examined the body, said that life had been extinct about two weeks. - BUILDING PERMITS " Building permit ofer $1000 iaoued June 10. mi: J, OarOk, wrt residence 601 K 51st st, bet Alarmed and Stanton itwU.
