The downward trend of construc tion costs has been constant, though not rapid, during the first four months of 1921. Reports of the United States de partment of Labor show building- mate rials next to the end of the list in the race for normal price levels, farm prod ucts coming first, fuel and lighting sec ond, structural materials third, and fur niture and house furnishings fourth. Uncertainty-as to prices and unsettled labor conditions still tend to retard building operations In many sections of the country according to a W. Straus of S. W. Straus Co. In spite of this uncertainty, an encouraging amount of prospective construction has been re ported by architects and builders, and Htraus expressed belief that activities would Increase as the season progresses. HOME COSSTETJCTIOJT GBQWS "There continues to be great improve ment In the construction of homes," Straus stated, "particularly In multi farally types. Measured In square feat, the total volume of new residences, sine the first of the year has been but slightly, behind the showing made dur Ing the same period of 1920. when build ing was at the height of its activity. "While a favorable showing has been made In the construction of homes dur. Ing' the current year, there hag been considerably lesa new, building of mer cantile and Industrial structures than during 1920 and 1919. In the total amount of new buildings there has been a slight gain over 1919, but a consider able loss compared with 1920. The period since the first of the year has witnessed the Investment of more money in buildings of all types than the aver age for the same period during the last 10 years." .
