ni n OTnrrr umni T ULUOIILLI VlUm r TROUBLE RENEWED Vancniivor Wh A nn'l 1o,--Tri old controversy over the improve ment of Sixteenth street, begun here several years ago, was renewed. Monday night when 58 irate proper ty owners along the street appeared before the city council to remon strate against the assessment roll. The question of tha improvement of the street was brought up several months ago, and it was decided that the street should be graded and graveled. When objections to this work were filed it was decided to put ln; new sidewalks and crossings, and the contract was let Fol lowing this action la petition was pre sented for the paving of the etreet, too late to take such a. step. It was the contention of the property owners that their rights had not been observed in the Improvement of the street and that their assessments ' were too large in view of the impfcvement made. It was declared that they should be paid by the city for the inconvenience that-the" improvement had caused them. J. L. Sutherland represented the prop erty owners. OLD COUNCIL BLAMED ' The old city administration was di rectly blamed by the property owners for the improvement. That 'the city was not to hlame Tor 1 he work was tli contention of William C Bates, who censured th property owners for non-appearance at the time the street work was discussed. Council men E. V. Coates arid .1. B. Atkinson., who were members of the council last year, spoke, in defense of their action and of Charles Davis, chairman of the street committee. READJUSTMENT I YIEW The assessment roll was confirmed by the city, but in recognition of the rights of .the proper t-owners a readjustment will be attempted with the city and contracting company, I The question of the paving of Broad way street was brought up and the hearing postponed two weeks. A' re monstrance was presented. Signed by mote than 50 per cent of the property- owners. An agreement between the council 'and the property-owners that the street may be paved this year is. considered probable.: The city may pay ) for the intersections along the street,! it is, said. -.i i. - j BUILDING PERMITS j niniUims of ilvuu or mure: i W.
