THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL PORTLAND, OREGON BETA PHI SIGMA ASK EXONERATION - A delegation of Beta Phi SIgmas, one ot, Jhe , high school - fraternities under the ban of tbe school board, with R. E. Carnathan as spokesman, called on Superintendent I. A. Grout and asked for exoneration of charges made against them. r . They said they had a large member ship, of which only five3 or six were still In high school. They stated that most of their members were responsible business men and were not taken In un til after they bad completed high school, and that the six present high i school members would be graduated , in June. They denied vigorously, reports of fool ish and dangerous initiations, and said the purpose, of their organization, was serious and : helpful .and much broader than reports indicated. . t Grout suggested that they communi cate In writing to the school board, and also that they see their way clear to wait until students finish high school be fore taking them into the fraternity. The educational affairs 'Committee of the board and Grout have prepared a questionnaire which they are sending to 30, of the largest cities In the country, asking for their experiences with, the fraternity problem and how they have dealt with them.. . Chinese Gunmen Go To Serve Life Terms Tee Guck and Shee Fong, who have been in the county Jail since the fall of 1917, were taken to Salem Tuesday morning to begin Iffe sentences for the murder of Chin Hong. Chinese merchant, on June 2, 1917, during a tong war. TJe state supreme court denied the appeal of the two men and the sheriffs office re ceived the commitment this morning. $38,000 Bond Issue Wins by 68-9 Vote Ontario. Or., March 23. At a special election Tuesday to vote refunding bonds, leaa than a hundred votes were cast. A bond issue of $38,000 was authorized by vote of 68 to 9. Railroad Bequests . Reieanng M Rate . Gut; Sought Raise Salem, March 23. A rehearing of the recent case irr which the public service commission reduced rates on fuel and pulp wood is asked in a protest filed with the ccommission ; Tuesday by the O-W. K. Sc JJ. company. " The auction of the commission in re ducing the rates approximately 13 per cent followed an order suspending a new tariff which the roads had attempted to file increasing . the rates approximately 15 per cent. r ', -1 . - Under an amendment - to the bar ex amination - rule announced by the su preme court Tuesday, only one examina tion will be held each year hereafter, be ginning on the second Monday in July. Heretofore examinations have been held In May and October. Fruit-canning and; Juice-extracting plants in Portland, Salem, Puyallup and other, cities will be merged.., ; . : For several weeks efforts have been made here and in valley cities where canneries are ..located,' by the Puyallup canning Interests, looking toward a mer ger, but so far as ia known none of the Oregon plants has agreed to join. KLAMATH FALLS WANTS TO KHOW HO PASSED BUC K -' Determination .to end one of. the biggest games of "passing the buck" ever played in Oregon, is in the mind of every citizen of Klamath Falls. ' . At leaot the citizens. of the Southern Oregon city believe that they have been made the loser in "buck passing" opera tions in regard to adjustment of freight rates over rail lines of the Southern Pacific company Inte Klamath Falls ana now tne Chamber or Commerce of that place is arranging a meeting of all "passers of the buck" to find out "how come." ; The meeting of all parties concerned is .being arranged by T. I Stanley, manager of the Klamath Falls Chamber of Commerce, according to advice re ceived by Frank Ira White, manager of the foreign trade .. department of the Chamber, of. Commerce. . San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, the California public service commission, ii the Oregon public service commiB8lon, the Southern Pacific com pany and the State Chamber of Com merce. , - : i ' -Klamath Falls is on a branch line. It is pointed out by merchants that for an extended period high rates were charged over the line because it was considered as being "under construction." Then rates were placed upon a branch line basis and the merchants of tbe city' are dissatisfied. They say .that Klamath Falls is the second largest shipping point in Oregon and that rate readjust ments mean much to growth of the place. - - . - , ,. "The reason we have called this meet ing," says Stanley, "is that when we talk with -Portland people they pass the honor on to tbe Sas, Francisco people. ' j j : "The California public service com mission says likewise of the Oregon publicise rvice commission, the Southern Pacific company passes the subject back to the state commissions and - they all come back to tiie merchants and ship pers of Klamath Falls to pay the bills. "We are not certani.but present Indi cations are that the real guilty party Is the Oregon public service commission, which -has probably not done its full duty in this matter. ' s ; ' - . 1 sj f Klickitat Chief Demonstrates His " Business Ability Goldendale, Wuh. ( March 23. Skookurn W.l-i-hee. hereditary chief Of the Klickitat Indian tribe, who owns a large farm on the big Klick itat river, near Klickitat station on the Goldendale branch of the North Bank ' road, feels that he has fully demonstrated his ability to conduct his own business affairs. He re cently sold to Klickitat county, a right of way through his place for a waon road, for which he obtained $300 in cash and the concession of having the road fenced on both sides. When the county commissioners first, sought the right of way. across . the chiefs land, they took the matter up with the Indian bureau and received' advices that $200 would be about right as a compensation.
