PORTLAND, OREGON. peaters ill jSflake appeal the Churches of Portland for Starving JJlillions SUNDAY SCHOOLS HELP CAMPAIGN Upward of 60 speakers, rallying to the combined China famine fund and the Near Cast relief appeal, will tell the story of the starving mil lions fn famine-stricken China, and of the suffering war victims fn the Near East, in Portland Bifble schools Sunday- These speakers will start the state--wide campaign that is be ing waged in the Sunday schools and young people's- societies for sacri ficial offerings at Easter. Norman Johnson, secretary of the Ore gon Sunday School association, has sent eut appeals to every school, urging the support of thewe causes. Kvery Bible school in the state will be told of the opportunity to save lives before Kaster Sunday. Three cents per day will provide rice or food sufficient to keep a child alive for one day. so the sacrifices made by the Sunday school members iU be visu alized to thern in terms of lives saved. There are 10,000.000 children reported to hf starving in Northern China. At the recent state convention of the Christian Kndeavorers this body in dorsed the combined campaign and pledged itself to raise funds. Their committers have already started to or ganize their forces for a drive. State ht-adquarters for both the China famine and Near Hast relief drives are in chars of J. J. Handsaker, 606 Stock Exchange building. All money sent to that office will he credited to the or ganization from which it is received, and usfd to purchase food for the hungry children. Lenten Mission to Be Opened Sunday The Kev.. A. W. Doran and the Rev. K. J. McOuinness, Catholic extension missionaries, will open a Lenten mission at St. lawrence'g Catholic church. Third and Sherman streets, on Sunday night. They will also lecture every nipht next week at 7:45, announces the lie v. J. C. ItuRhes. -pastor. These missionaries, who have bf-en engaged in chapel car work, throughout the Northwest, are elo quent preachers and have achieved suc cess in Catholic church extension work. It will be known as the "Kate Failing Anniversary." being the second anniversary of Miss Failing's departure for her missionary work in Ongole, South India. Se-veralmlssionaries will appear in cos tume and take part in the special pro gram. The primary department will dramatize "The Three Hebrews in the Fiery Furnace" the Filipino young men's class will give special music and the Sunday school orchestra will play. The First Baptist Sunday school of Seattle has challenged the White Tem ple school to an attendance contest, run ning until Easter. The award is a $50 silver loving cup. The local school is trying to double its past record, as Se attle is already several points ahead. The White Temple pulpit on Sunday will be filled by the Rev. H. T. Bing ham, D. D., pastor of the First Baptist church of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The temple quartet will furnish special music for both services. Whitney Boys to Give Twin Concerts The Whitney Boys' chorus of Port land is attempting a unique stunt Sun day evening. They plan to give twin concerts. Part of the chorus will sing at the Calvary Presbyterian church and part at the Clay Street Evangelical church. There will be enough boys to fill both choir lofts. There will be spe cial features sufficient to permit II. E. K. Whitney to direct all of the chorus numbers In each church. Several of the soloists will appear in both churches. The program has been arranged so that each audience will receive practically the same numbers. Each service begins at 7 :30 o'clock. Parsons to Address Forum The public forum to-be held in room A of Central library Sunday night at 8 o'clock will be addressed by Dr. Philip S Parsons, recently elected head of the Oregon School for Social Work. His subject will be "The Growing Power of Public Opinion in Settling Industrial Disputes." Following the address the audience will be free to ask questions. Weir, Baptist Bible worker, has ai ranged to place the Bible in state institutions in Oregon as follows: In the state penitentiary with about 300 inmates and 300 cells, a Bible and scripture text calendar for each cell; hospital for insane, 1765 inmates, three Bibles for each of the 38 wards; hospital for feeble minded, with over 500 patients, 50 Bibles and 150 cal endars; hospital for tubercular, 50 calendars and Bibles; boys' training school, 140 boys, 50 calendars; girls' training school, 38 girls, 20 Bibles and 25 calendars; the deaconess hos pital, Salem, 50 Bibles and calen dars. Mr.. Weir reports ready re sponse to his appeals to aid the work. The Corvallis Brotherhood leads the contribution ; list with $100. BAPTIST Dr. S. J. Reid, superintendent of evan gelism for Oregon Baptists, will preach Sunday morning and evening at the East Side Baptist church. This will be the last Sunday he will supply the pulpit, as the pastor. Dr. W. B. Hinson, has re covered sufficiently from his operation to occupy the pulpit the first Sunday in March. At the Church of Christ the morning service will center around the communion. The pastor will preach a sermon on the significance of the ordinance in the life of a Christian. A father and son banquet was given in this chnrch Fri day evening. The boys entertained the father and furnished the entire program for the eve ning, including toasts and special features. The Cradle Roll mothers have equipped a room in the chnrch for a nursery. The room is prettily decorated and supplied with conveniences and toys for children. Mothers of the congregation will J are charge of the nursery during the hours of church service. One of the "snappiest' eonventionettes of the year" is promised Sunday by the young people of Montavilla Christian church. The meeting will open with a sunrise prayer service led by LeBoy Robinson. The main session will be a conference from 3 to 5 o'clock, in charge of state officers. The alumni conference will be led by G. Everett Baker. A union Christian Endeavor meeting at night will conclude the program.
