THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, OREGOt. MONDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1920. CONSUMERS WILL NOT PAY HIGH PRICE FOR TURKEYS STOCKS ERRATIC BUT GENERAL TREND IS DOWN 14 COUNTRY AWAITING H TURKEY PRICE flOW FOULTBY Fancy Dressed Tarkevs ........... lacks Geese SOLD HONDAY ...i... .&SSe 4Z4tc Si 19s ..Sunday's arrivals of turkeys In the Front street trade were extremely limited. Nominal arrivals were -shown and sales for shipping stock were made at 50c to 53c a pound for the best quality stressed birds, quality considered. Monday morning; arrivals of dressed turkeys were nucti more liberal. In fact the supply was adequate to fill all early requirements. According; to the advices received by handlers here, much stuff Is available tn the country but shippers appear to be awaiting extreme -values' before letting go. It now begins to look as If the bulk of the turkeys will arrive very late, owing; to the anxiety of the country to boost values. While there is no cer tainty as to what course the price will " take, still It appears that very late shipments would only wreck values. Consumers have made up their minds riot to pay extravagant prices for tur keys or, In fact, any other foodstuff. . Those desiring special information retarding any market should write the Market Editor, Oregon Journal, enclosing atamp for reply. EGO MARKET IS QUITE ERRATIC With lower prices fluoted la the east, the local acg market is quite erratic Extras are QuoUd sx 83 At So a doxtn, a drop of 2c a daaen from .. Saturday's fisuree, - BUTTER TRADE COSTICES SLOW Slow trade continue tn ,the butter market. The bis retailers are buying only their daily re quirements because mast of them are expecting a further loss in the price. No change during the morning. r ' OEASOE FIGHT 18 SEVERE HERE Ravers fight for trade Is shown in the orange market her. Small sizes are, selling around S4.fi05.00 box generally, but the larger fruit is down as low as S3. AO Most of the wholesalers are losing money at these prices. .APPLE DEMAND CONTINUES GOOD Local apple demand continues Tery good, and the movement during the last few days has been seasonable. Practically all stock is moving, but best call remains in ths Urge sixes of red. stock, which are scarce. CMARIICET BASKLET PJETAIL PRJCEJ. By Hyman H. Cohen Columbia river smelt are slowly In creasing in volume in the local market, but receipts are as yet too limited to force extreme cuts In the price.. It appears that the fish are gradually making their way toward the Cowlitz, when the bis school is expected to make its appearance in the river. Indicating that a more stable govern ment exists In Mexico is the fact that the lobster concessionaries are asking: advanced prices for their offerings. During the last few years the lobster shippers were quite willing to sell at a reasonable price in order to secure their money without delay, as there was no telling- how soon a new government would be established and someone else would be given the lobster fishlfig privi lege. Now the lobster people are not a bit anxious, and if the trade is not willing to pay the price the stock is put in storage. Real eastern lobsters have made their appearance In the Portland retail shops. The: stock is. in fine condition and sells at $1 a pound. . The following prices ruled generally in retail shops for good quality. Some values are frac tionally higher and inferior staff fractionally lower: Butter Beet creamery, 08 SOe. In view of the English news, little attention was paid to the report of the census bureau on ginning, the amount turned out on ths growth of tha crop this season prior to December 13 being placed about as had been expected. The market at the end of the first 20 min utes wss active and steady at a net decline of 17 to 20 points. Weakness developed sgain towards the close under sctire selling.
