Cekea Consumers are not only being charged high prices on many food articles, but they are also being cheated by securing lens weight than what they are paying for. A representative of .The Journal re cently witnessed the weighing of 10 loaves of bread Jurt as It cam from the bakery delivery, and the entire lot, including wrappers, weighed only a fraction mere than 9 pounds, while without wrappers the lot should have weighed a full 10 pounds. This means that the consumer Is being robbed of bread that he Is psying for. Consumers are adYtsed that they should weigh every loaf of bread they purchase. Leaves are legally forced to contain either 1 or 1 pounds each, and consumers pay on' this basis. If a lesser weight Is offered, then only actual weight should be paid for. If this was done It would mean that eventually the public would not be offered short weight packages. Then again the bakers ara liable to arrest for offering short weight bread for sale. With the ex ception of the uncertainty existing in connection with tbe labor situation In England Walt Street begin the aew week optimistical y. The improve ment in sentiment Is due to the con tinued deflation in the prices of commodities, especially foodstuffs, and the expectation that there will be more money available for use in the securities markets before the end of the year. One important factor which Is making for confidence is the disposition on the part of the workers In the New England textile mills to accept lower wages. Manufacturers report that this movement Is becoming intensified and It indicates realization by working people of the de sirability of a reduction in wages in or der to gratify tho demands of the public for lower prices. Although retail prices have reflected but little of the severs decline In th prices of commodities, banking Interests are confident that the ultimate consumer will eventually begin to be able to pur chase more with the dollar. While the depreciation In the prices of commodities has been drastic in some directions it is not expected to continue to levels that would undermine the confidence of the banking institutions of the country. While there was a sensational decline in the price of cotton options, the head of tbe New Orleans cotton exchange last week sounded a reassuring note when he stated that the South did not look for any calamity because of the reduced quoted market value for Its principal product.
