Tomorrow Will pe ay 3n Churches of Sortlaihd Sbvejoy prohibition mally LOVDOY L BE Tomorrow is to be prohibition Sunday in the pulpits of all minis ters affiliated with the General Min isterial association, and at least part of one or both regular services is to be devoted to statements of the Importance of safeguarding; the Vol stead act and of telling why church members and all citizens who love good government should vote for . Dr. Esther Pohl Lovejoy as repre- sontatlve in congress from ,this dis trict. Dr. Lovejoy was unanimously indorsed by .the ministers of the association, both In regular and special sessions recently, and how best to elect her was left with the legislative committee of the associa tion, of which Dr. E. C. Hickman, pastor of Wilbur Methodist Episcopal, church, is chairman. Dr. Hickman's committee is working hand In hand with the Multnomah County Dry Congressional committee, with which la combined all of the prohi bition forces of the county and city. Upon recommendation of the eommittee, the general association set aside Sunday, October 24, as prohibition day and it will be generally observed - as such throughout the city and county. The Ministerial association indorsed Dr. Lovejoy because, of her long record of adherence to the prohibition principle itnd her present pledge to defend the Volstead act Against all onslaughts in congress,' if she is elected. Luther Convention Will Close Sunday Sunday will be the closing Say of the Luther league convention at St James English Lutheran church. At 3 :45 a. m. there will be a special Bible class for the visiting delegates to be conducted by one of, the visiting pastors. Rev. T. A. Jansen of Astoria will speak at 11 o'clock on "A Young Man's Vision." There will be special music by the boys choir and solo numbers by Mrs. Robert Francis Clark and Halfred Young. The evening service will be a rally of all the young people of the i Lutheran churches of Portland. The speakers are Rev, A. V. Anderson of Portland, who will speak on "The Bible in Education," and Rev. Professor T. W. Kretschmann of Seattle. The president-elect will also give a short address. Special musical numbers will be a solo by Halfred Young and a duet by Miss Ruth Brace and Mrs. Esther Frace Seymour. Will Speak Sunday Miss Florence A. Sullenberg will speak t the Comforter Center Sunday at 11 a. m. In the Portland hotel assembly room. Miss Sullenberg recently returned from Los Angeles and San Francisco, the home office of the "Truth" move ment. H J I wo$ortlandPiMe Classes in Rational Attend ance Contest Two Portland Bible classes are en gaged in a national contest with 27 other similar classes covering 18 states, now being conducted by the Inter nationa Sunday School association. The contest is conducted on a basis of credits for enrollment, attendance, Bible study and percentage of church membership. The national contest Is the first of a number of effprte on the part of the International Sunday School association to Increase interest in adult Bible classes. Reports are required weekly from each contesting class. . The Portland classes are the Warren vesper class and the Warren Bible class for young women, both being con ducted by Mrs. Angela L. Ford Warren at the First Presbyterian church. The vesper class meets at 4 p. m. each Sun day In room E of the church house and Is open to all youhg people, especially those living away from home. The class began its fall work three weeks ago with 82 present Last Sunday 138 attended. 'This Sunday Clinton O. Bay will conduct a 20-minute. song service and Miss Katheryn Keim and Paul H. Oelvin will sing. The third lecture, on "The Drama of Life" will be given. The Warren Bible class Is for young women only and meets at 12 :15 p. m. each Sunday in room E of the church house. This class also started its work three Sundays ago and has increased from 96 to 143. Credit for this increase Is given by the teacher to Miss Minnie Heath, Miss Grace Burton and Miss Marie Leasing. The subject Sunday will feature the ideal young woman. Next Tuesday evening the two classes will combine and enjoy a Halloween party in the church, at which time friends of the class will also be enter tained. Several spooky features are promised. Oti Family Affection Readings Feature The Bible readings in the Sunday eve ning hour of worship last Sunday will be followed this Sunday evening by a group of readings from the same source in which family affection will be pre sented, at the Church of Our Father (Unitarian), Broadway at Yamhill, Rev. William O. Eliot Jr., minister. At the morning service Rev. Mr. Eliot will preach the last of the series on "Great Prayers." At the Young Peoples' fra ternity at 6 -.30 p. m. a letter from Frank C. Flint, Rhodes scholar at Oxford, will be read. The special topic of study will be "Gothic Architecture." . Miss Leila Rogers will preside. United Brethren Raise Large Fund Bishop William H. Washlnger of the United Brethren in Christ has returned from Beach, N. D., where he held the Montana conference, the last of the con ferences of the Pacific district. He re ports that during the last year the Pa cific district raised in the United En listment drive, 890.485.05. Of this amount Oregon college at Philomath was en dowed during the quadrennium, which will not close until next year, with 877, 000. Of this amount 850,000 was raised during the past year and Oregon alone raised 826.000 of that. The bishop left Friday evening for a speaking itinerary of the California conference. St. David's Parish Activities Started The schools at St. Davids church. East Twelfth and Balmont streets,' have opened with more children than ever be fore. The follow-up campaign la being organized and will goon be in full swing. A party will be held on Wednesday, be ing given by the Girls' Friendly society for the whole parish. On Thursday night In the school at Fiftieth and Di vision streets a children's operetta will be given by the school. "A Dally Re minder" is being published each month of all the events, services and doings of the month for distribution through the parish. Packard, who addressed the synodi cal session of the Presyterian Woman's Missionary society. Dr. Packard had charge of Westminster hospital at Urumla, Persia. He told how he and Mrs. Packard were driven out of their home near Te heran and forced to flee to Aravan. a town at the base of Mt. Ararat, where they found a Near East re lief sation. Dr. Packard said the Turks took all their baggage) and clothing, save what they were wear ing. It so happened that both Dr. and Mrs. Packard had on summer apparel when the raid was made, so they suffered intensely In the cold December nights, while ma-king their Journey on foot. The attack was in December, 1919. Twenty tons of clothing given by Oregon residents are packed and ready for shipment to the Near East, according to J. J. Hansaker, state director. As the boat does not leave for a few days, additional gifts can still be included in the shipment APOSTOLIC FAITH A feature of the Apostolic Faith mis sion work Is an "all nations" meeting each Saturday night at 7 :45 o'clock. Songs and testimonials are given in various languages. Including Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, German, Pol ish, Syrian, Bohemian, Aremenlan and Chinese. The leaders report a real re vival within the mission and many con versions.
