Cox nar rowly escaped injury when a plat form from which he waa speaking here collapsed Thursday. Several people ' received severe bruises. Cox was not injured, but he had rather a narrow encape. As the platform collapsed the part on which he was standing shot up in the air. He Jumped down a few feet onto the shoulders of a couple of tall service men and in this manner reached the ground. Auto Crashes Hurt Two Persons, One Seriously Injured Two persons wre Injured, one seri ously, at Twenty-second street and Sandy boulevard late Wednesday aft ernoon when an .automobile In which they were riding collided with a truck. Sidney Hubble and Kenneth H. McNeill ;, councilman, four year term, (three to be chosen), I,. C. Pavidson, O. Salesman Burned By Battery Acid in Automobile Wreck Koseburg, Oct. 8. C. E. Ttoger, a traveling salesman, was seriously burned about the face and hands while return ing to Roseburg from a trip north. Ropers was driving a roadster and picked up a young man along the road. When they were nearing Wilbur, the car plunged off the road and, in try ing to pull back into the highway, was tipped over against brush, throwing the occupants out and pinning them against the bank. The sulphuric acid from the storage hattery burned Rogers' eyes, nose and throat. The men were not otherwise hurt. Dr. R. Lk Bathrlck has baen appointed as dental examiner of the United States health service for Douglas county. Tuesday was a record day for tax col lections in Douglas county, $83,356 being paid in. Baby Beater's Bail Is Forfeited; Court Is Upheld Judgment of the municipal court agii'nst Mrs. Rita Mathus. convicted of assault and battery on babies which she undertook to board, was sustained by Judge Jacob Kanzler of the domestic relations court Thursday afternoon, and the bond of $1000, signed by her hus band and M. K. Wllkins, was ordered forfeited. This was the second time the case came up on appeal from the municipal court, it having been discovered on the first occasion that there was an error in the proceedings. Mrs. Mathus has left the stale and cannot be found. Kdward Y. Iansing appeared for the city and introduced one witness, Mar shall Culck. who testified he had seen Mrs. Mathus catch a child by the hair and pull her across the floor. This evi dence, Judge Kanzler said, was suffi cient and he sustained the judgment of the municipal court. Suit will be brought at once to recover the bond.
