Man in Clutches
Of Mob Is Spared
ByHis Fervid Plea
Thorold. Ont, Aug. 17. (U. P.)
TDavta McNeal owes bis life today to his
pever as an - orator. Last night a mob
set fire to the town hall where he was
locked up on a charge of murdering
Margaret Boucock, 4 years old, dragged
bim to an improvised gallows- and pre
pared a noose for his neck.
. fMcNsai, facing the rumbling mob,
made an eloquent appeal for his life.
Blood streaming down his face, he cried :
f'Men, I appeal to you in. the name
of the man who was crucified, was put
tc death without a fair trial, to give
me the trial that -was denied him."
Aa he finished a half hour speech, the
crowd, calmed, quietly permitted him to
be taken away by the police.
