Washington and Stark . ; Four Stores in Portland ! ; STATE COMMISSION AUTHORITY 70 FIX 4 - - Has the industrial welfare corn ilssion the right to arbitrarily limit the working hours of women in com bined candy stores : anil , restaurants to not more than 48 hours a week! The question has been taken under advisement by District Judge Haw kins, It having- been raiser! Tuesday in the case against J. Gasparis, proprietor- of the Sweet Home candy; store on Thirdstreet. niar Alder. ' .Miss Bernice . Riley was the com plainant, and she was tacked by the commission in ; her ' attempt to secure from Gasparis extra compensation for the. overtime : which she (claims she But in at his store. The charfee against him. presented In court by Deputy District Attorney Dempsey. was that of employ ing . a woman or unreasonably long hours. Gasparis was defended by Wil liam Davis, who contended that the law of 1913, under which the, commission claims authority to. issue its order limiting the hours for women in certain lines of employment, was v superceded by laws of 1&17 and 1913. which permit females- In restaurants to work nine hours a day. but not mori than 60 hours a week. Mrs. Millie H. Trumbull, secre tary of the commission.! declared tat these laws did not take- away from ! the commission the powers, conferred by the act Of : . : ' i: -'. - In the testimony It was brought out that Gasparis has been, summoned twice before the commission on similar com plaints, and that at those times he simply paid the claimed overtime' charges rather than appear in court. Miss Riley claimed that she worked from noon to 2 o'clock and from S till midnight, seven days in the week, and that when she contended for overtime she was struck in the face with a wet towel by Gasparis. He claimed that he treated the girls at his store "Just as well as he knew how, and allowed them to eat ice cream and candy and drink, anything, even the "specials." to their heart's content,; also giving them their meals. :-,-: . j --i . , 1 1 , : Driver Held for Jury on Charge Of Manslaughter - Ralph Brady waived examination In municipal court Tuesday afternoon and was held to the grand.
