LICENSES CAU 0 FDRIN K The Ucene of three restaurants and soft drink establishments were revoked, one case Was dismissed, one postponed and one other proprietor ordered to sell out at hearings before the city council Wednesday after noon of charges against men who had been arrested by the police fo violation of the prohibition laws. s The one dismissal was in the case of 'II Prorreso restaurant at First and Stark streets, aa eating place the fame of which is not confined to Portland. The establishment recently changed1 hands, and Joseph Vlale. the new, proprietor, ex plained he had inherited .with the prop erty l a jug containing 'two gallons of wine. This was found by the police In a room over the restaurant and Vlale -was arrested and fined. . No evidence was given of selling liquor In the restaurant. Vlale was ordered to close the upstairs rooms and the case was dismissed. . , The .license of Tun Wo, Chines soft drink establishment proprietor at 94 North Fifth street, was revoked when it was shown that his cider contained 4 per cent alcohol when tested. Clderesales in this place ran as high as 110 gallons a day and the police said that Tun Wo maintained his supplies by the. barrel.' Month after month- Fred CuBry,( city chemist, tested the alcohol, always bind ing the heavy alcoholic content, and on this testimony revocation was made. The license of Stve Adrien, whom Chief Jenkins : accused of maintaining the city's largest bootlegging establish ment, was also revoked. He is located a.t 2S Couch street. Police testified as ' . t .' . . . , to numerous arrests of Adrien for pro hibition violations. Steve MarlchV li cense to run a restaurant at 101 North Third .street was rescinded although, he was gives until August 11 to close out. His dishwasher and other employes had been arrested for bootlegging. Mike Alaytoh, who runs a card room at-270 Couch street, also came up for hearing, but the commissioners were divided over his guilt, as some testimony was offered to show he had mended his ways. The case was postponed for a week. , : .. t Western Union , to r Give $40,000 Bonus j To Local Employes Employes of the Western Union Tele graph company in Portland and vicin ity will receive $40,000 bonus as their share of a $10,000,000 melon to be cut by the company about August 15. This Is the Initial distribution of bonus money under the company's neV profit shar ing plan, which provides for 'he annual allotment among employes of all reve nues above-7 per cent net profit. ? According to W. B. 1 Williams, super intendent of the Portland office of the Western Union, there are 512 employes of the company in tnis city and, approx imately 1000 in adjoining territory.
