Portland Saturday, Upon reaching As
toria, Mr. ' Muiily was disappointed to
find that the ferry was not running; On
Sunday 'he was one of the three first
owners of autos to bring their machines
from Astoria., landing at McGowan. Mr.
Munly left. the beach last week by the
way of Nemah, but reports that the
Astoria-McGowan route is much shorter
and the roads in fairly good condition.

Age Limits for
West Pointers
Are Broadened
Age limits for enlisted men of the
army desiring to enter West Point mil
itary academy have been broadened by
the war department In favor of soldiers
who had service for not less than one
year during the recent war, according
to copies of a general order now being
promulgated by the adjutant general.
.Ordinarily enlisted men at date of ad
mission must be between the ages of 19
and 22 years and must have had at least
one year's service.
This has now been waived In the case
of war veterans to admit them between
the ages of 17 and 24 years.
Prior service in the army, by draft.
voluntary enlistment, or through the na
tional guard, will be considered in de
termining an applicant's eligibility.
The examinations for entrance will be
held between December 1 and 15, and
successful
applicants will be granted
three months'
furlough to prepare for
the - regular - entrance
examinations;
which take place in March.
"There never has been a time since
the passage of the law authorizing ap
pointments from the army when all" the
vacancies have been filled." said the let
ter from the adjutant general, "and
every candidate frotn that Bource who
has qualified and desired entrance to the
academy has been admitted.
Enlisted men' also will be, permitted
to submit educational certificates 'with a
view to admission without mental exam
ination, hut these will be considered 'only
after the successful competitors in. the
examinations have been cared .for.
The Engineers ; company is to have
target practice every Sunday morning at
Clackamas through the month of Aug
ust. Captain George E. Sandy announces

that the company will go to Camp Lewis
for training camp -September 7 to ,23. .
Major J, Francis Drake has received
the silver cup for presentation to Com
pany M of Salem for being awarded first
rank at Camp Lewis for efficiency, at
tendance, sanitation and - general ap
pearance. Whenever Captain Leroy
Hewlett names the date the major will
go to Salem, and present It. Company
D of Portland, won second prise which
has been presented ' In the shape of a
silver cup not quite so valuable.

I rrjHE Improved Order of Red Men
JL, closed Wednesday night a most suc
cessful series of entertainments in con
nection with the annual great -council of
the reservation of Oregon. The prime
val forests of Washington county were
'sought in wfllch to confer the adoption
degree upon a band of palefaces. A. nat
ural little amphitheatre on the farm of
Dr. J. Dannells was selected, situated
south and west of Beaverton. and with
the sky for a canopy and -in the light of
a big campflre the work was given by
selected team of Oneonta tribe and the
address from the .tepee of the sachem
was glvenV by James T. Rogers, great
incohonee of the United States, L. Car-
stensen, , the venerable past sachem of
Oneonta tribe, gave most impressively
the part of the great prophet,' and the
parts of senior sagamore by John A.
Mastin and of Junior sagamore fcy L. B.
Smith, retiring great sachem, were
played with solemn savage dignity
; For the first " time : in the history of
the order, the great incohonee raised up
the great chiefs of two . reservations
Tuesday night, following a . banquet at
the Chamber of Commerce, participated
in! by the officers and delegates and
members of Washington and of Oregon.
The. great council of Oregon met in
Multnomah W. . O. ; W hall, v 112 East
Sixth street, Monday and Tuesday, and
the reporta.of the of fleer showed a posi
tive and material - increase in member
ship under the able leadership of L. B.
Smith, great sachem for the past year,
Monday evening Willamette tribe of
Portland,, in the presence of the mem
bers of the two great councils of Wash
ington and Oregon . and ,- members and
guests 'of Cum , Tux tribe ' of Vancouver,
conferred degree of chief upon a class.

been an active factor In' the fraternal
life of Portland for over half a centuryj
and "it bids fair to enjWy In future a re
vival of interest that shall make its mem
bership all that it ever has been, and

E. M. Wells, the new great sachem of
Oregon, is a long-time member and ac
Uve worker of Willamette tribe of Port
land, and when he hands back his toma
hawk of authority at Astoria next year
it is confidently expected by his friends
that he will have set many tribal poles
throughout the! state and greatly in
creased the warriors and chiefs of the
reservation.

The Camella Social club has arranged
for a benefit card party Wednesday eve
ning at Pythian templet West Park "and j
Yamhill streets. ' Members of the Ma
sonic and Eastern Star fraternities are -
invited, Proceeds are used for a 'social '
fund and to assist the hospital commit
tee in Its work.

J. O.' Wilson, head manager of. the
Woodmen of the Worjd,- will i leave for
Denver Thursday to attend tl first
meeting of the head managers since his
election at the Yosemlte last June. A
great deal of work Is expected because
of a number of fiscal changes made in
the business methods, an he may not
be able to return before the latter part
of the month.

Red Men; at the session of July 26 and
27, held in Portland, j is a member of
Wacheno tribe No. 13,-Joining It 20 years
ago. He now occupies the second high
est office in the reservation of Oregon,
and in accordance with long established
custom is expected next year to be
elevated to the position of great sachem.
Frost has held office in his tribal coun
cil felnce his adoption and has twice held
ths highest office In Its power to give,
that of sachem and great representa
