Scott was elected to fill , the vacancy. Since that time Mrs. Scott has held , the .position until - recently, when she was forced to give it up on- ac , count of ill health.! . She has been 'made ; honorary. life president and a new pres ' ident will be elected'for active service. -T" Among' the first steps -taken by the or ganization toward the bettering of St. Johns, which .was then a separate-town, was the establishment of a reading room on Jersey street, which .was maintained until 1 the library was built. 'There are in the city' about 260ti colored people,', a large. percentage -of whom are .women and, children who are In need of some community center which will offer an cppoTttinity to their mem bers for educational and social activities. The ' recent "visit of. Mrs." Cordelia Winn, city secretary of the national Y. W. C A. for colored women, and who is an Ober lln graduate and has been, a student of the New York .-School of Philanthropy, was the means or. arousing much inter est, in this new. branch of work. The colored Y. W.1 C.'A. is the outgrowth, of the hostess house, work whloh thrived during the war period in military camps. In Portland there ls a vvery large and interested, group- of colored women who are .anxloos t do all in their power to make! possible this branch. Under the direction of Miss Doris Miller of the local association, a group of colored high school girls- wene .organized into girl reserves. The organization started with an enrollment of 11 girls and now has 24 in its membership list wh.o are faithful- attendance and In carrying out their part of 'tha work which, is carried on under Mrs. G. H. Benjamin, a trained leader, who is also chairman of the -colored community , work. It is the aim .of the Y.,W, C. A. to find a room suitable for the new branch. From this depart ment the local association alms to main tain; Its room registry for colored . girls.
