The stock market closed steady today. Cov ering by shorts caused a steady tone In the late dealings, nearly all the leading issues moving up about I point to new high levels for the day. Steel common rallied from 91"i to 91 and Baldwin rose from 117 to 117. Crucible Steel after selling up S points to 155 fell to 150 and then rallied to 152. Southern Railway rose over 1 point to 29 and Reading moved up to 89. General Motors rose to 25, while Mexican Pe troleum advanced 1 to 192, - Government bonds unchanged ; railway and other bonds steady. ; Total sales of stocks for today were 134.000 shares; bonds, 15,066.000. Total Bales for the week were 3.106,700 shares: bonds, $59,007,000. i Crucible Steel featured a dull and list lees opening of the stock market today. . The awing in prices wss generally to higher levels. A rush of shorts in Crucible to cover forced that issue up 3H points to 155 H, from which it reacted to 151. Steel Vommon rose 4 to 9 1 H and Baldwin showed fractional improve ment at 117 H. The oil stocks showed some activity, Mexican Petroleum gaining 1 point to 192. National Aniline rose 1 point to 81.
