Summary of weather and crop ' condition in
Oregon for the week ending July 13 la made
by Edward L. Wells, tneuoroiogiat. ef the weath
er bureau, as follow:
The week opened with warn, clear weather,
ad nn several days temperature of 90 degreee
to 100 degrees uucuried aver a eoesiderabl
part of the state. Cooler weather began in the
western eountias Thursday and Friday, and by
the close of the week the temperature waa be
low normal generally. There were some hot
winds in the southern counties and east of the
Cascadea. The weather waa generally dry until
Sunday sight, when light showers occurred in
some eastern counties. On Monday and Man
day night light to i generous rauu occurred ta
Western counties. i -
Winter wheat 4s ' maturing rapidly, Harvest
is in progress in the sonthweatern counties and
will aoon begin in the eountiea along the Co
lumbia river and in the Willamette ysJley. Hot'
winds have done .tome damage in central and
northern counties, but the weather at the dose
of the week was very favorable. Spring wheat
suffered ooniidersbljr from heat and drought,
but wa later benefited by rain. It is heading
in many place, and in Jackson eountySte nearly
ready for harvest. Oat are generally good but
have suffered somewhat from drought. Tbey
are mostly eat in Jackson county and are being
harvested in Carry county. Some barley ha
been threshed. Bye harvest is - well" advanced.
Toe warm weather waa very beneficial to corn,
which is beginning to teasel in the warmer see

Strawberries ' are ; becoming scarce. Kaspber
riea and loganberries are fairly plentiful. Cherry
harvest is in progress in the Willamette valley,
the yield being somewhat uneven. 'The rain did
considerable damage to ripe cherriee, but will be
of much benefit tot later berries, and to apple
and prune.
Irrigated alfalfa made excellent growth. Cut
ting of the second ctop is well advanced in the
southern counties, while in the central counties
the first crop is being gathered. Cutting of oata
and vetch is progressing in western counties.
Vetch has been injured somewhat by aphid.
Considerable amount of hay have been dis
colored by rain. Pastures and range have been
drying rapidly, but will revive aa a result of

Potatoes are being marketed in increasing
quantities. The rain will be of great benefit
to the main crop. ' Hope have needed rain, and

S. C. Armstrong of Seattle was elected presi
dent of the Pacific Northwestern Grain Deal,
era' association at the annual . meeting Tuesday
afternoon at the Hotel Multnomah. L C San
ford of Portland waa elected sice president and
H. N. Stocked of Great Falls. Mont., secretary
and general manager. Plans lor work during
the eoming year were, discussed. An address on
the problem of financing the 1920 crop waa
titan by Edwin 1. Comaa of the Exchange
National Bank of ; Spokane. ' Max H. Hooser
spoke, gave a review of the work of the grain
corporation and showed the difference between
handling wheat under private and government

Cottage Grove, July 14. The local cannery
is making a clean-np of it entire pack. Within
a few dare there will not be a can left in tor
agn. This m the first time in the history of
the cannery that everything, has bee cleaned up.

ment at the opening was bullish, the pit crowd
figuring the market waa oversold at Tuesday's
close and unconfirmed reports having been cir
culated that black rust advices had been re
ceived toe late Tuesday to be' distributed. The
opening advance, however, encountered strong
seiung by leading cash and elevator interests and
the market turned weak.
Numerous stop-loaa orders were caught on the
break, about the only support on the way dawn
eoming from short taking : profits. Buying
gainst bids checked the slump, but the under
tone continued weak, long grain eoming - out
freely on all bulges and forcing new low levei.
There waa some disposition to even up in prepa
ration for resuming trading in wheat futures to
morrow. ' - 1
Continued Meal weather and eroo eondirinna
weighed heavily against values in the deferred
montna and weak cash market were a factor in
the nearby deliveries. Receipts continued lib
eral, with corn consignments falling off and eats
arrivals tending to gain.

about the labor , board award which may
be announced any day now and which
may take up all the increase to be al

In regard to the congestion of steel
products at the mills it can be said' on
high authority that there Is no present
danger of any mill shutting down.
Early Tuesday quite a rally was
started in the market by a report that
the British government bad agreed to
take over the French responsibility for
the Anglo-French loan in return for an
agreement on the part of France to
withdraw objection to trading with so

today says, speaking of the enormous
volume of federal reserve notes in circu
lation ; and the light explanation with
which the board dismisses the steady en
largement of the total, the current issue
of the weekly Chronicle is quoted as fol
lows : .
' The real explanation sems to be that
no attempt ia being made to stop the
further expansion in, note circulation.
