New Zealand Needs ; Many Products Made Of Oregon LumBer i :Cr-'i: :!-: ' '--.;...-- ? Oregon lumber products are in keen demand In New Zealand, according to John Hall, commercial : agent of that country in Portland, and a strong move ment is on foot for the removal of Im port duties on lumber entering the do minion from this state. : . - : -:- In furtherance of this movement a deputation from the Carpenters and Joiners' union and v representatives of this and other ; labor organizations at Wellington called on Prime Minister Massey in May, urging that the import duty on Oregon lumber be removed. The shortage . of housing ' is severely felt by working men in New Zealand and .the labor organizations not only ask the removal of the 8 per cent duty now charged on rough lumber from Oregon, but also urge that exportation of lumber from their own country ;be prohibited. .: - Reports issued by the forest depart ment 'of New Zealand show that the na tive timber supply would be exhausted in 40 years at the present rate of cut ting. ; Preferential tariffs are effective on importations from British Columbia and other British possessions and the Importation ; of ; millmade houses f rnm Vancouver, B.
