The Oregon delegation ' had a problem On its hands In the'facjt that Piardy had become wob bly. Ho wanted to present the name of Senator Chamberlain to the convention as a candidate for president. - Vith the lines tightly drawn between McAdoo and Cox and both aides cling ing in -desperation to every possible vote, the -Oregon men realized that even a single desertion would show -weakness in the Oregon delegation, which had been one of the solid delegations that had held the McAdoo forces together'throutfh the- many roll calls. They were using every Influence to hold Purdy in-line. . A. big meeting of McAdoo delegates -was held at the Palace hotel Sunday night ' and Purdy refused to go on the ground that he might be called upon; along with the other delegates, to stand up and re new his pledge to stand by tha instruc tions In the Oregon primaries. , Other Oregon men held that as long as Mo Adoo's .name was before. the convention with reasonable hope .nomination, al!
