Dr. Jenkins of Kansas City, who was 'originally selected to make the nominat ing; 'epeech, has finally been, persuaded not to do so. . This completes one of the most ex traordinary chapters in preconvention politics, for the man who is evidently most desired by the body of delegates Yo take the presidential nomination -has kept hla hands absolutely off the con vention and has refused to - permit his close friends, even to go through the . brief formalities which would put him alongside active candidates. ..' . BELIEVER Of coarse, there will . be skeptics who will - always doubt not merely the sin-J ceruy of McAdoo men here, but who will believe theite is some sort of collu sion between him and the active work ers for his nomination. The writer has Just made an ex haustive investigation of the McAdoo situation and after several days of in quiry among the men who are most active in advancing the name of Mc Adoo for ; the presidency ' these facta stand but conspicuously. . McAdoo has not sent a single message Tfrany delegate or- leader here encour aging activity in his behalf. Nor has he expressed his' views on any ques tions being considered at this convention either of strategy or platform policy. He has literally kept hands off. Mc Adoo's chief political advisor, into con vention" taattera have proved futile. Persons in a much better position - to know than those who originally vouched for the story have ' assured the " writer in unquestioned- ways that McAdoo ; is in good health and .- that his reasons for- declining - the nomination had noth ing, whatsoever to do with physical fitness. ; ; - - 'V - The fact, is that - McAdoo could not stop his admiring and almost frantically loyal friends,' in this convention from trying to nominate him no matter if he issued a dozen statements. , BEST CANDIDATE a, ? t They simply recognize him as the best candidate available and are absolutely sure he will serve if drafted." t ' If McAdoo is named, and it looks as if he will be. it wUl be because the bulk of the delegates here believe in the Wil son policies and want a candidate who stands for them. It will not be because McAdoo happened to marry the. presi dent's youngest daughter two years after be had been a conspicuous member of the cabinet. - It will be because he has shown sympathy with the wags' earner and i has administered the big jobs of secretary ' of the treasury and directed the raUroads during the war in a way that two-thirds of the delegates believe fits him for the presidency itself.
