Printer's Devil'

Trip to Ministry

Roy Melville began bis shop career
as a printers devil in a Baker news
paper office. He now stands upon
the threshold of the Christian Bible
university at Kugene, and is knock
ing at the doors of the printers'
union. Melville has but a few months
to serve as an apprentice. ; He has
beqn saving his money with the aim
of securing ordination to the min
istry and will pry his trade in Eu
gene, while completing his transfor
mation from devil to-minister of the

crime mystery faced Manhattan's over
worked detectives today with 'the finding
of the body of Manuel Haban, wealthy
Spanish. Testa'uranteur, shot to death on
a bed in' his lavishly 'furnished uptown
apartment. ' - The murderer stripped the

East Side Moonshiner
Fined- and Sentenced
For Operating a Still
iohn Johnson, east side bootlegger who
was Indicted Friday by the federal grand
Jury. was fined 8250 and sentenced to
30 days in the county Jail: Monday by
Federal Judge Wolverton. He pleaded
guilty to the charge of operating a still.
John Williams,' father of a large fam
ily, one ot the children being but a few
days old, also pleaded guilty, to running
a still In his house and was fined 8100.
Williams was arrested, several months
ago by Internal revenue agents, but when
family conditions were learned by the
United States district attorneys ofOoe.
prosecution was not poshed. - Williams
then promised he would refrain from
further violations. Last week the agents
again raided the home and found an
other complete still and several gallons
of mash. Prosecution Monday was en

missed and Thompson was freed. Cooper

Pendleton. June 28. Slightly more
than 50 teachers from Kastem Oregon
counties enrolled; today, the first day in
the extension normal school, courses to
be given, here during the next six. weeks.
J. H. Ackerman, president of the Ore
gon Normal school a Monmouth, was
here to ksslst in the enrollment and to
give the opening address. , Several more
teacher-students are expected to enroll
Tuesday morning. The course will end

for a counter-offensive in Ukralnia and

contractor, accused by Harry Qutnn of
the National Mines company of taking
$2500 worth of furniture from Qulnn's
house, has been freed ot the charge,
which Is said to have been due to a
misunderstanding between Qulnn 4nd
John Thomas, his business associate, as
to the ownership of the 'property.
