Journal's Seaplane Service Is On

Seaside Patrons Are Enthtisiastic
Seaside, June 19. Inauguration of
The Journal's seaplane express delivery
to Clatsop county points, notably to Sea
side and' Astoria, promises to be oils of
the most novel features of the summer
season at the beaches as well as a com
mercial Innovation that marks an epoch
tor the coast cities. ? . u
Regular dally trips of the seaplane ex
press carrying the first afternoon edition
of The Journal to subscribers at Seaside
were inaugurated Wednesday. Astoria

soon as that city has installed a skidway
for the reception of the big planes of
the Oregon, Washington A Idaho Air
plane company. :.
The express service, first to be regu
larly established for newspaper circula
tion, made its first : regular trip , on
Wednesday, leaving the O. W. X. basin
at Portland promptly at 1 :30 pi. m.
Dally at that liour the big birds will
rise from the river at Portland and not
more than two hours later The Jnnrnsi
will have arrived at Seaside and deliv
erea to journal carriers and newsboys.
The express Is a Journal departure, in
line with its constant endeavor toi Im
prove Its circulation service. I
The practicability of the unique Jour
nal, service and its great commercial
tmportae have been conclusively at
tested by the performance of the planes
during the first week. The remarkable
time record established by the planes Is
an Interesting feature for hot more than
X hour and 45 minutes has yet been re
quired for the flight from Portland to
Seaside. When papers are delivered at
Astoria the time of arrival at Seaside
will be from 20 minutes to half an hour

The week at Bayocean has been a busy
preparing for the season. Visitors
will notice a number of betterments. The

week and prepared for tenants. The
natatoriura is being' overhauled and

Tillamook county is working faithfully,
upon the construction of a road into Bay
ocean and it is hoped that the road will
be completed during the eummet. The
road is being built from Tillamook City
along the bay, and, when completed, will
be one of the beauty spots of the coast.
Captain Lt E. DeRock has installed
regular boat service across the Ay and
win meet all of the incoming trains. His
boat, Dorothy May, is a larger and
stronger boat than was operated the
past season, and is well equipped for
passenger service. The boat ride across
Tillamook bay is a pleasant part of the
trip for travelers to and from Bayocean.
This, together with the scenic beauty
along the railroad through the Willam
ette vaUey, the deep gorges of the Coast
mountains, with their roaring mountain
streams, Tillamook: bay and the ocean
trip to Bayocean. is one to be remem
bered. Mr. and Mrs. Carl H, Jackson are in
stalled for the season In their sightly
cottage. Maudy-Carlo. - -
Ds. Gertrude U Gates and her mother
and Mrs. Hopkins were recent visitors.
Ir. Gates expects to spend her summer
vacation In her cottage at Bayocean.
Mr. and Mrs. J. II. Lee were recent
visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Swan Hawk
insen at Bayocean.
. Miss Edith Smith of Portland is a
guest of Mrs. Carl H, Jackson for the

Word la received that Mrs. M. B. Mar
cellus and mother of Portland will open
their cottage at i Bayocean Immediately
after the Shrine convention.
Dr. and Mrs. H. A. Andrews and a

Many permanent residents have been
added to the population of this beach
during the last several months due to
the establishment of the large new shin
gle mill at Watseco, close by. Simmer
visitors also are now coming in rapidly
and the season was ushered In formally
by an opening dance Saturday with a
large -attendance from all the nearby
beaches.
Mr. and Mrs. L J. Rushlow and chil
dren Marie and Jack of Hillsboro were
recent guests at Camp Carter.
Woodbine cottage is occupied for
short vacation by F. E. Craw and Clar
ence Craw of Portland. '

Indications Are
Resorts Will Be
Very Popular
MANHATTAN, June 1. Although
the season is still very young, many
of the cottages of this beach are already
open, and Indications point to one of the
busiest seasons in several years. "The
completion of the new highway ; Into
Manhattan, ; which is expected in the
near future, will add a second means of
access to this beach, and make it still
more attractive to motoring parties.'
Miss Doris Huston has returned from
a fortnight's visit in Portland with her
sister, Mrs. C H. Walker. - -
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur von' Jessem of
Portland are spending a month's honey
moon at Dolce-Far-Niente cottage.
Mrs. M. Deming of Portland -has
opened , the Deming cottage for the

Rushlight cottage has been taken for
the-remainder of June by Mr. and Mrs.
Q- Carlson of Portland.
