the Crown-Willamette Paper com
pany. operating mills at , Camas,
Wash., and Oregon City. Or.. Wed
nesday acquired the entire holdings
the Hammond Lumber company,
in Clatsop county, as a pulp wood
supply source.
The property . includes 17,600 acres.
which contain about 660,000,000 feet of
standing timber, which, erases close to
SS per cent pruce and hemlock, accord
ing to K U Herren, Umber superintend
ent of the paper company. - Herren rep
resented the Crown-Willamette company
in the transfer and Q. B. McLeod. man
ager of 'the lumber company, handled the
sale end. -
It Is said that the new propeity gfves
the paper company a probable rive rnr
supply of spruce and hemlock, consider
ing the demands of both the Camas and
Ore iron City mills. The entire acreage is
4n Clatsop county tn what ts known as
the Necanicum district. The company
already- had large holdings, where It is
cutting-, in the Young's river district,
and with the new tract is said to be as
sured a 20 year supply f timber.
With the timber acquired also comes
IS miles of logging railroad. 4 engines.
SO logging cars and is donkey engines, as
well as a machine shop. -
Papers covering the purchase were
signed Wednesday in San Francisco,
where the head offices of the paper com
pany are located, and consummation of
the deal was announced to the Portland
offices by long distance telephone.

automobile accident which occurred

the corner of Hoyt and Seventeenth
street. Mrs. Butler was reported to
have been thrown dear of the back
seat of her car when Abram's machine
struck the machine in which she was
riding. - She had not r Regained her
senses at 3 o'clock , last night, and the
doctor Is attendance ; was , unable to
ascertain the extent of her injuries.
Poison Whiskey
Maker Convicted
.Etna Furukawa, wealthy'' Japanese
rooming house proprietor, said to have
made poison whiskey in a tin can, was
found guilty Wednesday afternoon in
Federal Judge Bean's court on three
charges of violating the prohibition law,
and as a result faces a $500 fine and six
months Jail sentence. The Jury returned
the verdict of guilt after a few minutes'
deliberation, t
Man Steps Out of
Wiiidow in Sleep;

of Salt Lake City, wen known commer
cial traveling man, fell from the second
story of the Owyhee hotel, Tuesday
morning' at S o'clock,' While asleep. . Be
is in a local hospital with a fractured
skull and small nope for his recovery

Larson, who Is said to be subject to
walking in his sleep, was seen to tum
ble from his room In -the hotel by a
policeman, who rushed to the spot and
found Larson unconscious, blood stream
ing from his nose and ears. He was
rushed to the hospital, where an opera
tion was Immediately performed.
The visitor went to .bed at 12 o'clock
Monday night and joked with the night
clerk at the hotel overt a large dinner
he had just consumed, J Larson is mar
ried and the father of two children. His

To Bring Delegates
A total of S60 delegates to the Trav
elers' Protective association convention
and 450 to the Kiwanls convention have
arranged for special train movement to
Portlands The O-W. will operate a spe
cial train of T. P. Ail delegates from

welcome attentions' of Hanville to Miss
Lela Ashworth of Astoria and their out
come : The evidence of Wednesday
showed that HanvUIe had solicited the
publication ' of the first article on this;
subject, and that statements made in
this article called forth, a reply, giving
alleged facts about him. It is on the
second article that . Hanvllle ; bases his
suit for damages. . .
While en -the witness stand Han villa
admitted that at the time he was trying
to cultivate the attention of Miss Ash
worth he was married, but his wife was
suing . for divorce, t Miss Ashworth and
her father both testified that HanvUle's
attentions through letters and sending I
of flowers were unwelcome and annoy
