48 Stolen Antot Recovered The 'auto
theft department of the bureau of police
.recovered 40 of 44 automobiles reported
ctolen during May, according to a report
filed with Chief of Police , Jenkins by
Lieutenant Harvey Thatcher. Nine ma
chines stolen outside of Portland have
been recovered by. the department, says
the report. During- May. 1919, the' report
shows that 97 automobiles were stolen.
The department made 93 arrests during
the - past month for various offenses
which totaled $333 In fines and Jail
sentences of 421' days. i

Dry Law Violator Fined Two vio
lators of the federal prohibition law,
William . Gorman of Portland and Ray
Jones of Waconda, pleaded guilty be
fore ' Federal, Judge Bean Saturday and
were fined $150 and $100 respectively,
federal agents found six pints of moon
shine in Gorman's pocket. They report
that he . was about to make a sale at
the time of arrest About 16 gallons
of grape mash and a small 'quantity o'f
wine were found at Jones' home in Ma
rlon county. Both men had previously
been held to the federal grand jury. ,
Jefferson High Issues Annual The
Spectrum, the annual class publication
of the graduating class at Jefferson high
school, made Its appearance Saturday.
The annual contains 175 pages and is
especially good in-, character. In spite of
the fact that the printing was done in
its own plant, which is worked to ca-i
paclty printing- special election school
bulletins, school - diplomas 'and ' other
school jobs. - Jefferson has the highest
'number of graduates of any high school

Two Patrolmen Promoted Promotion
Of Patrolmen William A. Barker and
Charles A. Cason to sergeants was an
nounced Saturday by Chief of Police
Jenkins.' Barker -is record clerk, and
Cason is property clerk at the police
station. Both have been connected with

Silverman Hearing . Continued Hear
ing of Jake Silverman before United
States Commissioner Drake Saturday
was postponed until Monday owing to
the absence of witnesses. Silverman is
charged with being an accomplice of his
brother. Morris Silverman, in the sale
of stolen War Savings stamps. He is
at liberty on $2000 bonds. .
Injured in Fall of Cement W. Whip
ple, an employe of the United Contract
ing company, was "bruised about the
right shoulder Saturday when several
sacks of cement fell on him while work
ing on a construction job at Mountain
boulevard near Patton road. He waa
taken to St. Vincents hospital.

The national park service of the. de
partment of interior has ready for free
distribution the 1920 . automobile guide
maps, according to information received
by the general land office here. Maps
are available of Yellowstone. Glacier,
Mount Rainier. -Crater Lake, Tosemite,
Sequoia and General Grant and Rocky
mountain national parks. The maps are
printed in colors and show all the roads
and trails within he parks, hotels and
camps, free public camp grounds and
other information. Small road maps of
the states in which the park is located is

showing the location of the national
