In THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, P ORTLAND, MONDAY, MAY 17, 1920. IN PORT, BRINGING From the orient on the return trip of her maiden voyage the steamship Pawlet of the Admiral line arrived up Sunday. The cargo was entered at the customs, house at noon Monday and work of discharg ing is under way at the municipal No. 4. The manifest of the Pawlet ehows 570 tone of vegetable oil In bulk. Tbie will be pumped Into the tanka at the St. Johns terminal. The balance of the cargo of the Pawlet consists of fire crackers, matting, rattan chairs, beans and curios. Practically all of the ?50 tons of miscellaneous goods are 'for Eastern points in bond.. For the outward- trip the vessel will take a mixed cargo from Portland for principal ports la the Oriemt, Loading will be rushed and the craft will be dis patched the early part of next week. Outward-bound cargoes for the week will be cleared on the steamships West Nlvaria, West Jester and the Chinese steamship Hwah : Wu. While exports for the current week will fall short of those of the preceding week, they will show a high average In the offshore business. With - lumber for the Orient, the steamship West eKaU got away from Astoria this afternoon. She completed a successful trial trip to sea. Fresh water was taken at Astoria this morn ing. -1 rr" CAPTAIJT ROBERTS HOST AT FXiAG RAISIXG OX RANCH Captain J. H. Roberts, shipbuilder, liner and wrecker, is the owner of what he calls a "ranch." This snug harbor is located on Laurel avenue, between the Powell Valley . and Section Line roads. Sunday Captain Roberts Invited some friends to assist in1 the planting of a flagstaff and celebrate a flag raising. Captain John Foldat, mastef of the ' steamship Everett, conducted the serv ice. Mrs. Foldat was the official pro : tographer and all matters were con ducted in true ship style. A hungry ship is the curse of men at the sea and Cap tain Roberts malnta-lned his reputation by serving a real dinner, TWO MORE MASTERS ARE WANTED BY RIVER jLtXE Application has been made by the management of the Harklns Transporta tion company for two additional mates, one for the Lurline and one for the Un dine. HeretofoiS'ft has- been the cus tom for the watchman to handle all night freight, but the heavy volume of business now offering on the lower liver makes the addition of a licensed officer on each of the freight boats. Fair weather has stimulated the pas senger business between Portland and points between here and Astoria.,'' Sun day excursion business was heavy with all outbound steamers. SnTPYARDS BUILDING MORE STEEL STEAMERS THAN EVER Lloyd's register, of shipping'' has com . piled some interesting statistics, of ship construction throughout the world. In crease in- steel construction and decrease In the building of wooden hulls is a marked feature of Lloyd's report. Quot ing from the statement issued today : "The world's shipyards are building a greater volume of seagoing tonnage today in the shape of steel steamships than ever in their hlJory. Steel steam ers under, construction for the quarter ended April X are reported to have aggre gated 7.692,000 gross tons, as compared with 4,935,000 tons at September 30, ,1918, and 7.504,000 tons at September 30 . last, the latter -being the high record until the quarter just ended. Total tonnage of all kinds under con struction shows a decrease, however, the aggregate being 7,941,000 tons, as aualnst 8,048,000 tons on September 30, 1919. This is accounted for by the prog ORIENTAL CARGO felll ll ill ! ress of the shipping board's program toward completion and the marked de cline in the building of wooden, steam ers. Only 105,000 tons of this type of construction are under 1 way, as con trasted with 1,324,000 tons Just before the armistice,' since which time , there has been a steady falling off. This has been most marked in the United States, whers the -. shrinkage has been from 1.169,000 tons at September SO, 1918, to 65,000 tone today. . ., Figures for the first quarter of this year show that Great Britain now holds' the lead in shipbuilding over the United States , by a margin of 821,000 tons, al though this country led by 1,930,000 tons a year ago. At the beginning of this year the two countries ' were neck and neck, the advantage being only slightly with the United Kingdom, i While Britain Is building a greater number of eteel steamers and a consid erably greater aggregate tonnage than this country, the average ! size of her ships is considerably smaller, her 814, of 3,879,000 gross ' tons, averaging only 4161 tons, as against 6873 tons for the 450 American ships of 2,418,000 tons. ALIj ALONG THE WATERFRONT With passengers and freight from Portland to Southern California ports, the steam schooner Celilo, of the Mc cormick Hue, will sail from St. Helens this evening. JOURNAL.) Secretary tf State Bainbrldge Corby, In a letter received by Representative Mil ler of the Seattle district, holds -out Ut ile hope for any early action for the re moval of discriminating: duties imposed by France on canned salmon Imported from the United States as compared With the Canadian product. Under a favored nation clause, France grants favored rates to the Canadian salmon. There Is a reciprocity agree ment between this country and France covering: more than 90 commodities, but canned salmon Is not on the list. Secretary Colby says negotiations with France to secure the addition of salmon or other ; articles to the favored list probably could be undertaken only in connection" with a reopening: of the broad question of tariff relations be tween this country and France, and he does not intimate when he thinks that may be done. ; , The Seattle Chamber of Commerce has been urging: that discriminating: duties which give an advantage to Canadian canned salmon be gotten out ot the way.
