Cohea EMAHDS AIHO BUTTER Butter market situation here has Shown surprising strength during the last few days. Instead of the decline that was so , generally - forecast by the trade, values on both prints and cubes hare been fairly well maintained. With Northern baring an rather liberal scsle and th EMtem market till high, cream er? interest did not make their expected drop in the price of batter. The weakening of the Han Francisco trade during the last few dys baa been an advene Influence, and the South ern trade will therefore he closely watched. . That thi and other Northweetem markets HI be influenced by what haptens in California during the nest few days, U a certainty. Any further lot in the South would force values off hare, . luat at the moment there ia no nrrlu of twitter in the local trade, and cube are being sent out as rapkllj a made. POTATO DEMAND GROWING EAST Demand for potatoes is growing fast here and mora strength was shown daring the last 24 hoars than for several weeks past. Demand li keen from various -Willamette valley and V.at.ra Hrainn mind mm mm mm mnd.ruta from California. By Hymns H. Cohea Consumers are. evidently so full of smelt they caught mr were forced upon them by well meaning neighbors that they nave purchased leas foodstuffs dur ing the last few days than for an ex tended period. Huch an avalanche of fish has never before been seen by local consumers. Soma have tried to eat them all, and have only spoiled their appetites. Oth ers have thrown large supplies away. Consumers should take care of these fish, because they will come in handy after a while. They should be carefully put up be tween layers of salt and when needed Hhould be washed thoroughly. Some have made a failure of putting these fish away, because they 'put water along with the salt. This is an error. Only dry salt should be used. The fish will make their own brtne. Trading has been moderate in territory wools on hand in the wool market of the United SUte during the pt few weeka Thi due primsrily to the fact that there is nothing left except medium and coaraa wools, all the fine and half blood stuff liaving been cleaned up long ago. What few fine wools are arriving on the market are being readily sold. Buyers still pay little or no attention to anything coarser than a three-eighths grade, and in fact, until recently, there has been very little three-eiahto moving, but since the s fine and half blood baa been cleaned out of the market mills thrcugh necessity have been forced to take the nut coarser grade and the result it that three eighth wool is moving more readily.' Quarter blood still remains the drug, with only small dribbles moving now and then. We believe that as oon a. fine and medium wools are in the market, it will mean that mills will pay no attention to tho coarser grades, until these are sain worked into fabric Another factor in the situation is we rail road strike, which is more acute in the East than in he West, and difficulty in moving wools from Botton to mill throughout the Naw Eng lsiid t-tates ha slowed up operation!, considerably, although we believe that the condition caused through the railroad strike will not be lasting in effect. e Eye en New Oils All eyes naturally are now on tho naw clip to be shorn in the West. Shearing has been greatly delayed through the continued bad weather and there will be very little shearing started before May 1. Northwestern growers must necessarily have high prices for their new clip wool owing to the fact that they have gone through an expensive winter, but on the other hand, buyers are proceeding cautiously and the trade will be slower in opening this year than Ufual on the new clip wools. This due princi pally to the fact that, the financial situation is very tiht and all concerned will have consider able difficulty in financing their usual require ments. Therefore, will be less anxious to tats on laree volumes of new wools, especially those arade which will not move readily. The fine t and medium wools will, of course, be those to bring the best prices on Uie market ana wm move in a reasonable time, therefore the buyer There was continued weakness with a slow tons In the sheep and lamb alleys at North Portland for Wednesday but no farther changes were re flected in value even though killers were in clined to seek supplies for less. Year ago Montana is purchasing hay in the Willamette valley and is inquiring for additional stocks. This is the first time that hay has been shipped from this j section in that direction. Reports from j the interior indicate an extreme short age of hay and prices appear to be'little object at the moment. Montana houses have frantically wired local people for supplies of not only Willamette valley hays but were seemingly willing to pay the freight rate both ways on any stocks of alfalfa that Western Oregon has to offer. The situation in millstuffs is equally as firm as the hay market. Leading Interests are asking aj least $4 7 a ton for millrun while seme are said to be asking a further advance of $1. A $50 millrun market is therefore in sight here for the first time. Oats market i quiet here but prices are firm. Little activity is hoW in barley, but prices are stationary. Vegetation Is Backward Klward L. Wells of the Portland office of the weather bureau advises: The fore part of the week was cloudy and cold, with frequent precipitation in northern and eastern counties, and stane snow in ele vated districts. Toward the cloc of the week fair weather prevailed, with cool nights and warm days. Frost occurred several mornings, but the afternoon temperatures late in the week were the highest experienced thus far this sea son. Farmers are behind with their work and vegetation is unusually backward, hence the dry, warm weather waa very welcome. In the wat-tern counties grass is generally good and meadows are fairly good, though backward : in eastern counties the cold weather lias seriJ ously retarded the growth of grass and hay crops. Most of the range stock has been turned out, but in many cases shortage of hay has re sulted in stock being turned out too soon. Gras Is insufficient in many plac, and the wet ground is being badly cut up, which will reduce the carrying capacity of the range later in the season. There has been, however, little loss of stock Shearing of goats has been begun. Cut Worms In Wheat Where winter wheat was not winter killed it Haw Vwrk, April 2S. (I. N. .)
