JOHNSON'S HISTORY Johnson's political history, as out- ;s lined by Jordan, Is as follows: In 191-0 i he registered ts a Republican and was -elected on that ticket as governor of i California ; he Joined the Progressiva i party In 1912 and threw his influence ' against Taft in the presidential elec tion : in 1914. And they emphasize that relief from the fixed charges does not redound to the benefit of the com pany, but to the benefit of the company backers, the car riders. Regents Confirm Dr. Dillehunt Dean Until Term Closes University of Oregon. Eugene, April 24. The appointment of Dr.' Richard B. Dillehunt of Portland as dean of the university medical school irt- Portland was confirmed until June today by the regents of the university in special meet ing. Dr. Dillehunt was named to suc ceed the late Dr. K. A. J. Mackenzie No intimation was given as to what action would be taken in regard to the appointment for next year. The regents also confirmed the ap pointment of Professor Walter C. Barnes as head of the history department, suc ceeding Dr. Joseph Schafer, who left to take up work at the University of Wis consin. Dr. Warren D. Smith was granted a year's leave of absence for research in the Philippines and his place is to be taken by Dr. E. T. Hodge of the University of British Columbia. VILLA TO ASSIST OBREGDH'S REVOLT Rebel Chief Has Definitely De cided to, Join Forces Opposed Mo Carranza. Washington. April 24. (U. P.) Francisco Villa, rebel chief, has defi nitely joined the Obregon revolt to overthrow President Carranza. de spit the fact that General Obregon is known as the "only man who ever defeated Villa," according to an an nouncement tonight at the headquar ters of General Alvarado, represen tative here of the revolution. The news of the Mexican revolution available in 'Washington today was one sided, practically all favoring the rebels. Dispatches were received today from Chihuahua City that Villa had sent assurances to Governor De la Huerta of Sonora that he would cooperate with the revolution against the Mexican fed eral troops in Chihuahua. Villa declared that the federals would not be allowed to leave Chihuahua to invade Sonora. Alvarado said Villa Is fully prepared for his campaign in Chihuahua in sup port of the Obregon revolt. In his foray several months ago in Coahulla, the home state of President Carransa, Villa confiscated a large amount of ammuni tlon that Carranza had secretly stored at Musqulz, according to Alvarado. 0111 El Will Represent Oregon At the forty-third annual convention of the National Electric Light associa tion in Pasadena, Cal., May 18-21, tenta tive program for which has Just been Issued. He is moreover liked by i business men who believe- his Judgment would be more in sympathy with large business enterprises and would encourage individual initiative more than would that of the radical senator from California, JOHNSON IS FEAKKD So as the situation appears today; the Republican conservatives of the East are apprehensive of Senator Johnson. They fear a third party If he is turned down at Chicago. And if that doesn t happen they realize what the effect; can be of Johnsonian "support" There jwas, no third party in 1916 and Hiram John-, son "supported" Governor Hughes. ' but the people of California knew that! the senator was merely keeping party pledges and that he was affronted by the intimacy of the Republican presiden tial nominee with the reactionary wing of the Republican party in California. The Republican leaders must consider three things how not to offend Johnson if they don't nominate him and how to keep his followers In line for the Repub lican nominee1 and how. to retain the in dependent vote which has shown a dis like for the organisations in both politi cal parties in the formation of Hoover clubs thrughout the country. STRENGTH HELPS HOOTER Just now It looks as if Johnson's strength helps the cause of Herbert Hoover the only Republican prominent in the public eye with the exception of William Howard Taft who could do serious damage to the Democratic plans to use the treaty as an issue or vehicle whereby control of the government would ' be retained for the next four years. "BROTHER" JOHNSON RADICAL. But Brother Johnson is not altogether satisfactory to the conservatives in the Republican party. They accuse him of radicalism. His friends respond that Hiram is a liberal and a safe one at that, and if the Republicans don't take John son, they are likely to get a Democratic radical, which is supposed to be a worse fate than would be in store for the coun try than if the California senator were elected. The Republican leaders, however, know very well that the extreme yiews of Johnson on the peace treaty would be embarrassing, for if he were the nomi nee It would remove the cry for the Lodge reservstions. Senator Johnson voted against them alL So as Johnson develops the Republicans must find some man who "stands right on the treaty issue. Governor Lowden, Leonard Wood, Senator Harding all wanted the Lodge reservations to accompany America's entrance Into the league. But to offset Johnson, somebody must be brought forth who can carry the West someone who is 'also a progressive and someone who Isn't too closely affiliated with Eastern Republicanism.
