American Ux payers, through "honest mistakes," have been "holding out" from Uncle Sam approximately at the rate of $100,000,000 a year, It was revealed today by an- audit by experts for the treasury of the income and excess prof its tax returns made last year. One large corporation alone was found by this audit to be short $25,000,000. At the treasury department It was de clared that In this case, as well as prac tically all others, there was a misunder standing aa to the liability of the tax payers. No prosecutions are expected. Nominal penalties may be assessed. The audit just completed refrs al most entirely to the returns based upon earnings made In 1917 and upon which returns were filed in 1918. Officials stated that the government probably would receive far in excess of $100,000,000 In additional taxes or 1917. Money Obtained for Spurious Diamond ? Returned to Victim Following her arrest Monday on a change of spiling an imitation diamond for $140 to Miss Ethel Davis of the Clif ford hotel, Mrs. Rose Keilus refunded the money and the charges were dis missed by Municlnat Judge RoHsman. Mrr. Keilua had advertised in A morn ing paper that the diamond was for sale, and Miss Davis purchased it, according t'j the charge. Aft'T she had taken the -.-e to an expert, who told her it was practically worthless, she caused Mrs. Keilus' arrest. Frozen Army Beef To Be Sold at U.S. Retail Butcher Shop AH the fresh frozen army beef that Portlaid consumers will buy will be sold at the government retail store's butcher shop, to be opened within a few days at Fourth and Pine streets. One carload, 30,000 pounds. Is here now, and another carload is en, route from Chicago. The move is to combat high prices. Prices will vary with Chicago, quota tions, but generally will average around 13 cents a pound. Better cuts, "of course, may cost slightly more, but the saving still will be great compared to current retail : prices, according to E. A. M. Fowler,! superintendent To provide food to those whose sup plies have been cut off since the rail road strike, canned roast beef has been greatly cut In price. Two-pound cans that formerly sold for 55 cents are to day going for 30 cents. Nearly 5000 cans were sold Saturday, and the move ment today was heavy. Tomatoes are being sold In limited quantities, slocks generally being de pleted over the country Just now. Cans with a few ounces less than two pounds contents are selling for 9 cents. Revenue Officers Catch Moonshiner With Marked Money "Gee, no ! I've had this money for a long time," John Frlede, 1391 Carutheri street, is alleged to have told revenue agents who visited him Saturday night. The revenue men strongly insinuated that Friede had sold some liquor just a few .moments before their arrival and that par of the money in his : purse had been exchanged for moon' ' shine. To Friede's consternation, the reve i nue agents called the number of a $10 bill In his possession. Then he knew he had sold moonshine to the wrong person. Frlede and his wife were Jailed. Non-Partisans Are Flayed in Meeting Staged at Medford Mef'ford, April 20. Under the auspices of the State Taxpayers' league at a meeting held here Monday, Ktate Sena tor Walter M. Pierce of La Grande and Arthur Foster, the Clyde (N. D. ) farmer, made addresses against the Non-partisan league of Nnryi Dakota. Senator Pierce also spoke In adherence of his bill pro posing a divided, session of the legisla ture. Foster's arraignment of the Son-, Part'snn leatru-i was drastic and he made some surprising comments about the ideus and working of that organization In North Dakota for the past two years. Has Great Record in Fire Investigations . Salem, April 20. Sheriff George Mc Duffee of Morrow county has request ed A. C. Barbur, state fire marshal, to delegate H. H. Pomeroy to the in vestigation of a fire at llardman which is Baid to have occurred under suspicious circumstances. Pomeroy, a deputy in the fire marshal's office, has been making a remarkable record in uncovering a number of Incendiary fires within the past few weeks, in cluding one at Ifilgard, Union county, and another at Boardman, in Morrow county, securing confessions in both instances. Communists to Be Freed Upon Bonds Of Thousand Each All members of the Communist Labor party now held by federal authorities may be released under bonds of $1000, according to advice received by R. P. Bonham, head of the local offices of the United States immigration service, from Assistant Secretary of Labor Post. Victor and Julia Saulit. alien Rus sians and alleged leaders of the Com munist Labor party in Oregon, are the only members of the party now detained here. "I"T1 'i'1! Bend Hunter Found Dead in Woods With Rifle in His Hand Bend, April 20. Walter Weber, an employe of the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber company, was found dead, late Monday afternoon two miles southeast of Bend, as a result of a gunshot wound sus tained while out hunting. A .22 calibre rifle was gripped In the man's hand. It is believed that Weber tripped while going through a barbed wire fence, and that the rifle was discharged. His par ents reside in Greshain. A brother, F. W". Weber., is principal of schools at l-apine. Weber was nn ex-service man and member of the local post of the American- Legion. J Morgan to Help Austria Paris, April 20.
