State Engineer Cupper Inspected the proposed municipal water system at North Powder and the proposed ex tension of the municipal water sup ply system at Enterprise, bote of which have been turned, over to the state en gineer's office by the state board of health : for approval. Baker Bans Jitney Dances; Transient Aimed at Musicians Baker, April 13. -- Jitney dances In Baker were doomed Monday by the city; commission, which passed an ordinance prohibiting the practice of col lecting fees for each dance at public af fairs given by private enterprises. The ordinance was aimed principally at transient orchestras which. It was charged, have been fleecing pleasure seekers by crowding too many dances Into the evening tn order to augment their profits. . i Train service on the Sumpter Valley railway between Baker and Prairie City was Interrupted Saturday by a land slide that covered the tracks near Aus tin. Passengers were transferred. Mrs. May Drake, formerly Miss May Hollman of Baker. Is dead at Boise, ac cording to word received here. B. P. Barnard, Grant county pioneer, who left two months ago for! Phoenix, Aria., for his health, is also reported dead. ' Funds to finance i the appearance of the Baker Concert band at the Shrine convention in Portland next June will be raised at a benefit dance. A tota)l of $147,586.72 was paid out by the state Industrial commission to Injured jorkmn and their dependents during the month 6t March, according to the monthly statement of the com mission. Total disbursements fqr the month aggregated $15,766.51, of which $17,972.61 was administrative expense. - Receipts of the department for the month totaled $267,775.03. An unas Slgned ; surplus of $832,619.89 Is shown in the report. i A total of 1621 accidents were re ported ; to the commission during the month, of which seven were fatal. Present Improvements to the state memorial building at Champoeg will be left to the Judgment of Peter D'Arcy of Satem and Oeorge H. Himes of Portland, prominent Oregon pioneers. This course was adopted by the state board of control Monday after a visit y to the; historic spot in company with iiimH , ami u Arpy. ati appropriation of $5000- wrts made by the state legis lature ;of 1919 for the Improvement of the memorial building. Up to- the pres et time, however, no action has been taken by the board. It is planned to use some $2000 at this time in re painting the building and adding cer tain necessary conveniences. Leslie Butler, Head Of Hood River Bank, Succeeded by Son Hood River, April 13. Closing 20 year as president of the Butier Bank ing company of this city, Leslie Butler has resigned and has been succeeded by his son, Truman Butler, who helped organize the 'bank April 4, 1920. The elder Butler will retain the chairman ship of the board of directors. The younger Butler has been active head of the batik far several years. The retiring banker will devote his time to philanthropic activities. He is vice president of the state hygiene and anti-tuberculosis organizations and a member of the Y. M. C. A. executive ommltltee for Oregon and Idaho. He is also j chairman of a committee named to investigate children's homes of the state find recommend measures for co ordination of their work. He is 72 years old. Aj gold watch was presented by the directors of the bank at the anniversary celebration. Three Injured When Car Goes Over Bank The Dalles, April " 13. Three persons were seriously injured Sunday when an automobile, driven by Dr. A. P. Ingram, went 'over a steep bank five miles east of here. Dr. Ingram suffered seven broken ribs and 'Mrs. Ingram received two fractures of the legs. Dr. D. T. Brown, who was also in the car, re ceived a compound fracture of the right ankle when he was thrown from the machine, which turned over three times, landing upside down in the bottom of the canyon. Mrs. Brown escaped with minor scratches, as did two children, Alton Ingram and Elizabeth Brown. New. Legion Post Is Organized at Wamic Wamlc, April 13. A local post of the American legion has been organized with the following officers: W. P. Blanchard, commander : Chester Brit tain, adjutant ; Carl Pratt, secretary treasurer ; Don Miller, chaplain.
