Bertha Akers. 19-year-old Idaho rlrl, today facd her sistera in Federal Judge Bean's court and denied that ahe had run away with William. B. Wataon, the hunband of one of her slater. Wataon waa arrested on a white slave Charge on the ground that he and Miss Akers came to Han Francisco from Oreiton. Mrs. Wataon and Mrs. Viola Rolph ot Winona, Idaho, appeared in court. Across the courtroom sat Mine Akers. The sisters stared at each other. Mies Akers testified that although aha had come to California with Wat son, she had at no tlmejUved with him. At night he slept under the automablle and she slept in it, she testified. She also told of how they crossed the Oregon-California line. According to the girl's story, the ma chine broke down Just as they came to a large white sign on which were the words, "California-Oregon." The girl then left the machine, una said, and walked past the sign. Watson repaired the car and caught up with her later. Court Must Decide Disputed Claim of Waterfront Strip Just who owns th? major portion of a valuable strip of waterfront on the east Side, extending south to Reno street, and on pari of which municipal terminal No. 4 stands, must be determined by the courts. Federal Judge Wolverton, Mon day, decreed in denying motion of County Commissioner Alwin Muck and his wife for dismissal of the Weyerhaeuser Tim ber company's suit against ihem. The Mucks, the O-W. R. & N. com pany and the city of Portland are named as defendants in the Weyerhaeuser com pany's suit. '. The O-W. R. & N and the city are involved becauue they own ad jacent lands and a readjustment of boundaries would affect them. Weyerhaeuser maintains (hat Muck removed survey marks and substituted fraudulent marks with the purpose of keeping for himself a strip of land to talling 2fl acres and extending between two and ithree city blocks in length along the river. It is worth thousands of do lars. The Mucks are in possession of the ; disputed land and are endeavoring to establish a homestead and eventually ac quire a patent Thela land is part of the old, James Loom is donation land claim. Irish Sympathizers In Portland Do Honor To Easter Week Martyrs Honoring the memory of tha "martyrs of Easter week, 191,' Portland sympa 'hixers of an Irish republic at a celebra tion at Lincoln high school. Sunday night passed resolutions denouncing England's measures of militarism, calling on con gress and the president to recognize tha Irish government and calling upon the house to take immediate favorable ac tion on the Mason bill providing for a diplomatic and consular service from the United States to Ireland. Dudley O. Woolen of Seattle waa the speaker of the evening. He told of Ira land's long struggle toward independ ence, likening the underlying principles to those of the American Revolution and not to the Civil war because be claimed the Irish people had never been by their own free will a part of Great Britain, "Ireland's only hope is in the recog nition and support of America," declared Wooten. "More than 20,000,000 Irish men have blended their blood with the blood of the American people and are to day among the most valuable and reputable citizens in this country. Kavanagh. assistant district forester, has returned from Okanogan where he has been attending a meeting of the livestock association. O. M. Plummer and R. A. Blanchard were other Portland visitors. "Members of the association are wide awake, progressive stockmen," said (Cavanagh. "and they have some espe cially high grade animals. They are planning to put on a livestock show this fall. Adjustments were made between the forest service and the association as to distribution- of stock on the range, special rules governing salting and round-up expenses, and the recognition of the association in connection with forest service administration was effected. $400,000 Reputed Timber Land Price; Portland Men Buy Marshfield. April 6. A big timber deal was closed Monday when Adelsperger 4 Conrad sold to R. J. Hubbard and John Kiernan of Portland 170,000.000 feet of timber located south of the Umpqua rlVer in, the coast country," The buyers are owners of the Winchester Bay Lum ber company at Reedsport, and will log the tract and build a railroad to trans port the logs to the Keedsport mill. r The Umber Is part of the big holdings a hlch Adelsperger & Conrad some ttonths ago purchased from the Gardiner Mill company. Most all of the timber has been sold to mills at Reedsport. so ail the plants at that place now have their own timber. The priefs paid for the land Is said to be about 1400,000. Inquiry Is Ordered Of Cotton Profits Washington. April . (I. N. S.) Cot ton manufacturers are ordered investi gated by the federal trade commission, for the purpose of ascertaining their profits since 1914 and whether they have Indulged In practices to bpost un duly the prices of cotton yarns and cot ton goods, under a resolution which passed the house today. Employers to Sue Unions to Enforce Arbitration Award Denver. Colo., April 8. (U. P.) The Employers' association here has an nounced it would bring suit to enforce the recent building trades arbitration award, which postponed wage Increases until June I. Three Crafts ignored the award and went on strike April I, union plasterers winning their demand for $10 a day. Carpenters and lathers are still on strike. The employers will seek to force the unions to live up to the arbitration award accepted by their representatives. Mill Force Increased Bond, April 6. Adding approximately 150 men to its payroll and changing from two shifts of 10 hours each to three shifts of eight hours each, with 20 minute lunch periods on company time, marked a new development in the lumber Industry here when the Brooka Scanlon Lumber company went on a new schedule Monday morning 'at S o'clock. Of the 150 additional men on the payroll. 50 will be employed at a new camp to be established in the woods. Life Convict Escapes From Guard in Crowd Sacramento. Cal.. April (U. P.) John Hammond, a prisoner serving a life sentence at San Quentin prison. Is still at large today after escaping from his guards while en route to Folsom penitentiary.
