The Journal. Thursday. The judge fined, 21. three failed to show up for trial and the re maining; canes were set over until a later date for trial. Forty-two of the arrests were for operation of an automo bile without proper headlights. In al most every caae the driver pleaded guilty, giving defective wiring or a burned out globe as an excuse. The court accepted the excuses. The 21 per sons fined paid $110.50 into the city coffers. Portland Scenes Featured The April number of the Crescent, the official pub lication of the Shrine, is to be devoted. entirely to Portland and the national convention In June. A letter received from Harry Lewis, Its editor, by the general committee, said the cover de sign was being done by a Portland firm and was a combination scene, fea turing Mount Hood, the Columbia river highway. and other scenes, with Shrlners frolicking over the landscape. Dr. Robblns Speaks on Arbitration The public will be welcomed to the north gallery of Central library tonight at 8 :15, when a lecture will be given under the auspices of the Portland Federation of Churches by Dr. E. C. Robbing on "The Pitfalls of Industrial Arbitration." At the conclusion of the lecture there will be a discussion pre sided over by Otto Hartwig. president of the Oregon State Federation of Labor. lesson Is Political Economy The reg ular lesson In the course of political economy given by the United Land and Labor league under auspices of the State Federation of Labor, will be given In the Study Hour room of the library to night. The subject is to be "How Shall We Guarantee the Permanency or Homes?" A lecture will be given by F. E. Coulter, followed by questions and answers. Traffic Dvtles to End Notice has been received from the railroad administra tion by the Portland district freight traffic committee, that the committee will cease to function with the return of the roads to their private owners. F. W. Robinson is chairman of the com mittee. Lecture o Birds Herman T. Bohl man will give an illustrated lecture on birds before the Oregon Audubon society next Saturday night at t o'clock in Li brary hall. His subject will be "The Birds of Crater Lake National Park." The public is invited. Laborer's Foot Crashed J. N. Cline, 6822 Eighty-fourth street Southeast, a laborer employed by the Eastern & West ern Lumber company, was struck by a piece of falling timber Thursday, his right foot being crushed. Hazard took a large audience of Mazamas and friends up Mount Rai nier Thursday night with his pictures which he showed in Library hall. Color was added to the snow-sliding pictures when someone in the rear cx cuted a skillful yodel white they were being shown. Firs Reports All forest fires will be reported by lookouts direct to the supervisor's office rather than to the ranger station this summer, accord ing to a new arrangement decided upon at the meeting of supervisors at Baker, so as to facilitate fire fighting work. Accused of Assault and Robbery Herbert Orwig was. arrested Thursday on a warrant charging assault and robbery of Charles J. Stuart, First street, last June. Bail was set at $2000 pending preliminary hearing In the municipal court. Stuart alleges lhat Orwig and a companion named Glen Bailey accompanied htm to a room in the United States hotel, where he was held and forcibly rohbed of $35. Barks Held to Grand Jsry Bartholo mew Burke, an employe of the. P. R., L. P. Co. at the Piedmont car barns, was held for grand Jury Investigation by Judge Rossman in the municipal court Thursday on a charge of con tributing to the delinquency of a minor. Bail was set at $1000. Burke was ar rested on complaint of Mrs. Q. W. Roberts. The name of a 7-year-old girl Is mentioned in the complaint against Burke. Fined for Stealing Wend P. Peter son was fined $25 by Judge Rossman Thursday on a charge of larceny, fol lowing complaint of W. S. Jeans, 601 East Polk street, who accused Peter son of stealing wood from the latter's woodyard near the plant of the St. Johns Cooperage company. The court remitted $10 of Peterson's fine, Olaf Akesson and A. Lecluyse, arrested at the same ttme on a similar charge, were both released.
