Alex ander Berkman, Emma Goldman - and the other 247 deported "reds" on the Buford, otherwise known as the "So viet Ark, are clad to be back in Rus sia, where "free love and good govern ment predominate." They never expect to return to the United States. This was the testimony given before the house immigration committee by F. W. Berkshire, Immigration offi cial of El Paso, who accompanied the party to Russia. "They had a good time and a casual observer would have pictured them as a picnic par;' " "One of the things that cannot be said against Mlss-Ooldman and other members of the party Is that they are 'spoofing'' about Jhelr belief In 'free love,'" the witness said, basing his statement on observation made aboard ship! "Freedom was accorded them aboard the , ship during the day, and 'free love was much in evidence, Berk shire said. Turns Down Picture Selected by Church Brownsville, Feb. 11. Although it Is not altogether an uncommon thing to hear the minister scoring' the picture show for vulgarity and indecency, it Is rather a novel state of affairs when, as was recently the case at Brownsville, the cinema man announces that a pic ture selected to run by a local chhrch here is "unworthy of a place on the theatre program." Thomas Miller, the movie man in question. Intimated that the picture selected by the churchmen was neither clean, wholesome nor en tertaining. Fire Peril in N. Y. In Grip of Freeze New York. Feb: 13. The snow and Ice blockade of New York's streets have put this city in the greatest peril from fire today in all its history, according to a warning issued by Chief Keton of the fire department. While responding to a three alarm fire at 321 Broadway, the apparatus had to be hauled part of the way over the sidewalks. STRINGENT LAWS ON IMMIGRATION URGED AS Tenth of Oregon's Population of Foreign Birth; 6000 illiterate Children, Declares Speaker. Salem, Feb. 13. More stringent Immi gration laws were advocated by Pro fessor John C, Almack of the Uni versity of Oregon in an address on "AmerlcanlsaUon" at the public library here Wednesday night. The un-Ameri- canised immigrant, the foreign element in this country which refused to adopt American ideals and American customs, AJmack aald, offered a problem, the solution of which this nation must face sooner or later. Emphasizing the importance of this problem to Oregon, Almack pointed out that 100,000 people In Oregon, or one tenth of the total population of the state. Is of foreign birth. Six thousand of these, be stated, are Illiterate, 30.000 are still unnaturalized and 13.000 can neither speak nor writ the English lan guage. Although pointing out the many grave problems with which the country la faced at this time. Professor Almack displayed a most optimistic attitude toward these problems by declaring his confidence in the American people to solve each one of them correctly in the proper time. George Steelhammer of Kllverton was elected president of the Marion County Druggists' association at a meeting here Wednesday night, at which time the association was organized. About 25 druggists from Stayton, Woodburn, Sil- vi;rton, Aurora. Hubbard, Jefferson and other points throughout the county at tended. J. L. Smith of Portland, newly appointed prohibition commissioner, ad dressed the druggists, explaining the provisions of the federal law relative to the sale of drugs and medicines under the prohiblton law. Trial of A. Slaughter, Salem naturo path, charged with violating the criminal syndicalism law, has been set for Tues day afternoon. Slaughter is out on $500 bail. Salem is In the midst of five financial drives this week, the T, W. C. A.. Boy Scouts, Commercial club, the Salem hospital, Salem Deaconess hospital and the Salem Homebuilders' association all being out on a search for funds. A new building for the state industrial school for girls will be sought at the next session of the legislature by the board of advisors of the school, com posed of women of Portland and Salem, according to information received here. The one building which now consti tutes the property of the school is held to be entirely inadequate to meet the needs of the Institution. The appropriation of water from Hen tine creek, a tributary of Little North Fork of the Santlam river, for the de velopment of 115 horsepower for min ing purposes is sought by the Silver King Mining company of Albany in an application filed with State Engineer Cupper. The proposed mining develop ment Is located In eastern Marion county and it is estimated that the develop ment will entail an expenditure of ap proximately fi0,000. The power is to be used in the reduction of gold, silver, lead and zinc ores. Other applications for water rights were filed as follows: By William F.
