SECTION TWO EDITORIAL TOWN TOPICS EIGHT PAGES IN FIELD OF SPORTS FOREIGN NEWS PORTLAND, OREGON, SUNDAY MORNING. FEBRUARY 8, 1820. HIKE ROUND HERE BRINGS MORE FUN THAN JOY' RIDES . i One Walker Enthused With Walk Through "Wilds" Near Port land; Lapses Into Poetry. Thy m7 tine of th Jot of the opea raid -Krora a ictt In ft motor car; Thry any talk of th. rin and tb eurrei to liarp, knd what caaotlne prices ar. JJU th. 07 of the trafla, of the woodland paths IWh.re the motor can never to. And of heights too sublime for their ears to climb Far above all the aounda below. By A lUker Around Fortland there are scorea et good places to hike, half day Walks and close-in walks which take one seemingly far from the heart of the city. We chose the hillside road Sunday, the winding, grass grown road, full of mud and washouts that follows the contours of the hills to Llnnton, about midway between the two automobile roads, the -Skyline boulevard at the top of the hill and the Ltnnton road at the river's edge. The road is reached from the end of the Depot-Morrison car line. Tea, it is muddy ; but what is a little thing like mud to a hlkerT Shoes should be well lied and woolen socks are lndlspenalble. There are ruts and gullies, landslides and washouts. There are places where one must climb the bank at one side or wade to his shoetops In mud ; there are long Stretches of slush and water where the drainage is obstructed. DATS OF REAL SPORT But only more Interesting does the in secure foothold make the route. It is a sensation that must be' akin to walking On eggs, the stepping gently upon a sur face of wet sediment, wondering if it will hold or not. Sometimes it does, and again one flounders about In a foot ot so if mud. Hut tha mud all comes off in I the next marshy atrip of the road. rjrLater on, the road will be dry and more delightful for those who want olid places to walk. In and out the old road winds, now lust above the river and now back in the hills crossing the head of a narrow canyon cut by a wild stream that is rushing down the hillside. Bristling with fir trees are the canyons and hillsides, while the luxuriant plant life, native o Oregon, abounds everywhere and adds to the wild effect of the road. Just across the river Is the city always In view, but a glance In the opposite di rection takes In a wilderness. One never meets an automobile on the Hillside ; b-oad : one never passes a house, except lone little deserted cabin that Is at times taccupled by wood cutters ; one meets Ibut comparatively few persons on foot, especially at this time of year. On a lear day the road commands a view or he entire Cascade range, with Mount St Helens standing out especially clear. Above Whitwood Court there Is a trail winding down to the town and to the terry, where one may cross the river and ake the St Johns car. The length of the trip seems to vary with whoever takes It. ranging- from five to 15. Our pedometer registers about sight miles. rnblic Library Has Number of New and Interesting Books Rear Admiral Flsk's story of his own lfe, under the title of "From Midship- nan to Rear Admiral," is one of the lew books added to the shelves of Portland Central library this week.
