RABBITS 1 1 1 The question of how to dispose of the surplus animals that are produced in an ordinary backyard rabbitry is one that is often the deciding factor as to whether the breeder will continue rais- j , , . ! Ing rabbits or not. The selection of a i suitable breed and boosting by the breed er for his special variety with its su perior meat and other, qualities have been given columns of space in all pub lications, but what to do with that which annot be used on the breeder's own table has been left for him to solve. This has been .the stumbling block for many an amateur breeder. The best will, of course, be kept for breeding purposes but a large part of those produced should be disposed of for meat. Very little difference Is found In the relative food values of the differ ent breeds notwithstanding the endless argument puttip in favor of one or the other. The local market is the one best adapted for the small breeder and the immediate neighborhood often proves the most profitable. Proper dressing of market rabbits la very essential to their continued sale. Poorly dressed rabbits are unsightly and will turn a customer against rabbits for good. . Care should be taken to properly bleed the rabbit so that there are no blood shot spots. While people who are in the habit of eating rabbits would just as soon the pelts were still on when they buy them, many customers are more apt to make a purchase If the rabbit is nicely dressed and ready for the cooking pro cess. Again the pelts are not of any value to the consumer while they are to the producer. ' Rabbit meat was the "main stay" at two notable Northwest weddings recent ly. Progression in eternity is to be along . well defined lines ; and thus the in heritors of any specific order or king dom of glory may advance forever with out attaining the particular exaltation belonging to a different kingdom or or der. Four Prize Winners From Setting A rather remarkable record Is for four prize winners to be hatched from a set ting of li eggs. S. K. Dewey of Sheri dan. Wyo., bought a Betting of Rhode Island Red eggs from A. J. Ramey of Oswego, Or. Four of the birds from this hatching were shown at the recent Northern Wyoming Poultry association show, all getting well up In the money. Pcate Wins With Orpinglons B. V. Peate was a big winner at the recent poultry show with his Snow White Orpingtons. Peate is a specialist in the breeding of these fine birds and has won at seven different shows this year. He is a breeder of long standing and staying with it. Growers Meet at Aurora Aurora. Jan. 30. loganberry growers and other fruit growers will meet here February 7 to promote the extension of fruit growing in this section. Iast year a good beginning was made when a number of farmers put out loganberry fields. The demand is so great that many others will go into the business this year. W. L. Within two weeks every community In Sherman county will have an active farm bureau at work, Moro, Grass Valley and Michi gan communities have already organ ized ; Klondike, Harmony and Fairview will organise this week, while the re maining communities will meet the week following. Committees of farmers work ing In the interest of the farm bureau in their respective communities have met with good success. Indications are that over 60 per cent of the farmers of the county are Joining the farm bureau. Some sections report practically 100 per cent. Improvement of livestock by the use of better sires, cooperative control of the weeds of a tumbling nature and seed wheat certification are among the most important community problems to be handled this year. Yakima Apple Crop Last Season Worth About Two Million Yakima. Jan. 31. The Yakima Fruit Growers' association, the only coopera tive distributing agency in the valley, has had a prosperous year, according to reports of officials given at the annual meeting jusi neia. i ne organ naiiun nuu keted 1200 carloads of fruit for its membership of 250. As 900 carloads of this output was apples, the total value of the year's business runs close to the $2,000,000 mark. The fruit is sold in pools and the grow ers are paid after the pool is closed, but they may get advances from time to time as their needs develop. For the six month." ending December 31 the associa tion had receipts from sales amounting to $776,102, and disbursed to growers net proceeds amounting to $365,040. The as sociation has 13 rJacking plants and one large cold storage and pre-cooling plant. Fruit is received at the warehouses direct from the orchards and is sorted, packed, shipped and sold by the marketing or ganization. Grange Officers on Trip in Douglas Co. Roseburg, Jan. 31. C. E. Spence, mas ter of the Oregon State Grange, is spending about 10 days in Douglas county on a visit to each of the granges. Spence is accompanied by Dr. C. H. Bailey. D. S. G. M.. and C. J. The Owyhee Ditch company, has for some years paid a small bounty for gopher scalps, provided the gophers were captured on or about the banks of their 85-mile ditch.
